After a 25 Year Break, 914 Ownership Again
#559
Still going through boxes from disassembly last fall. Here's all the "extra" electrical stuff I removed. An awesome cassette deck, amp, and speakers. An alarm system that was wired into about 10 different places. A starter switch bypass. And a few miles of wires.

Another project: the relay board. Ugly.
The bottom is even uglier. The original dielectric filler is cracked and spontaneously falling out.
With a little effort, the rest comes out. I will check this and refill with a dielectric epoxy.

I remember the real '71 914-6 I bought had some killer stereo mounted in the front trunk. Couldn't imagine any music that sounded better than a 2L 911 right behind your ears... was happy to rip that out!! Now If I just hadn't sold the car!!!!!!!! I'm sure we all have that story of why did I sell that????????

I am still trying to figure out the sequence of events for the all special things done to this car. Based on my observations so far, there was collision repair done for the front right (and later redone). And replacement of half the right rear fender, and the rear panel. And later hillbilly "repair" of the rusty rear trunk floor, as well as two episodes (I think) of more "repair" of rust in the passenger floor. Some of the body work included original Bahia red, but the final complete paint job was bright red, with generous overspray. After that came the "let's hide everything with black undercoating everywhere. And I have no idea when the Club Red fever hit, with all the sexy color added to the drive train.

One more crack at the brain box, with some careful application of paint remover. The red is gone.
The box is still pretty ugly--not sure what I will try next to remove at least some of the stains.

Here is the relay board after soaking overnight in GoofOff. That dissolved most of the remaining tar material. I have some leads on dielectric potting epoxy to refill and re-insulate all the leads.

Meanwhile, I have been working through the main wire harness, identifying all the plugs and components, and still looking for damage to repair. I got as far as the rear firewall today.

Oh, fudge. While sorting through more parts I found 2 pieces of engine sheet metal I forgot about. This in the lower front section.
This required some straightening, and one spot of welding. I ran off to the powder coat shop but was too late--they quit at 2pm on Fridays!
