Smile Engine upgrade

I've had the car for less than a year now and already thinking to upgrade the motor. I was originally thinking going to a 3.6VR. I've spoken with Steve over at Rennsport and what a nice guy he is. He really knows his stuff when it comes to conversions. So anyway, that was my first thought but then in talking with a guy here in Edmonton who does a lot of Porsche stuff, a 3.6VR is a good upgrade but my Edmonton guy is saying why not go to a 3.3 turbo where future upgrades are less restrictive.

My SC is built differently than a 930 but I like the look of my car other than I would need a tea tray if going with a turbo. Turning it into a sleeper might be fun.

Even if my 3.0 is rebuilt to a 3.2 I don't think that will cut it for me. With a 3.6VR, no more valve adjustments, better fuel management and about 280hp. A 3.3 turbo (euro) brings me to about 325hp with future upgrades to increase power. Tranny upgrades would need to be done also, maybe sooner than later. The more I think about it the more I want to leave it alone.

Looking for some input from someone smarter than me.

Sammy,

Quite obviously, you are the only one who can decide how much performance you want,.....

While a gross oversimplification, if you want the car to go faster, install the 3.3 Turbo (along with all the necessary upgrades for durability). If you want the car to accelerate quicker, you cannot go wrong with the 3.6VR.

These engines have totally different personalities.

If emissions testing was not an issue:

1) PMO MPFI http://www.pmocarb.com/

2) Headers http://www.fabspeed.com/

3) twin plug http://www.patrickmotorsports.com/special/40/

....and if I didn't want to do it myself, I'd send it to Steve.

If it were me, I'd do the 3.6 993 engine.

- Rock solid reliability (except valve guides.... Get those done).
- HP is closer to 300 at the FW
- The engine screams like a Banshee when at WOT.
- No turbo plumbing

PM me and I will put you in touch with James over on the Canadian Forum. I think his handle is Peritus but not sure.

he just sold hic car .. an SC with a 3.6VR in it . he can give you all kinds of info. He took me to the track in it and the thing was unbelievable. i was impressed that the 915 could take the torque of the 3.6 although i think he had some work done to the gearbox to , you would have to ask him . Great guy

Varioram and it's variations are really awesome with gobs of torque. I think in a light SC body it would burn off tires like nuthin. Who posted that in-car video of a 911 with a 3.6 engine on the track? That thing was un-frikken-believably quick.

Just remember, a 3.6 transplant is not a cheap endeavour, and you still have a used engine that could end up costing you some $$.

It sure is. I'd be scared to fire up something like that. I had enough anxiety on my humble lump of coal.

I drove my old 3.6L '74 in November. It's a ~2600lb widebody I sold my friend about 5 years ago. Yes, it needs TLC, but the car's all there. Had nearly $25K in the car with what was a $2K chassis and "free" engine that came from getting an engine in trade for parts that I had no cost basis. 930 brakes, valved Bilsteins, decambered/raised spindles, 930 brakes, Euro 915 w/ LSD. Basically everything but a trailing arm conversion. Underwhelming. Sure, fast-ish in a straight line, but what work. Hard pressed to run times faster than my Spec Miata (~2:10, Thunderhill full track). That's about 10 sec/lap slower than the yellow car, aka the faux 993RS Steve built for Kim that I now have. Also 3-4 sec/lap slower than the RSA I just sold that was basically stock with some OK-ish springs and shocks.

Well, I've decided to go with the 3.3 turbo. The 3.6 is a great upgrade and more reliable but I have opted the other way, probably the main reason is because it leaves more room for future upgrades, more than the 3.6. What i would really like is for Rennsport to do it but that's just not feasable for me right now. Steve, you live to damn far man! Everybody here lives too damn far!

Thanks to Steve at Rennsport for spending a good half hour on the phone and thanks to all you guys for your invaluable input.

I will keep you guys posted and start a thread on the conversion.
