While in the shop for a tune on my PMOs, I asked my local mechanic to check the clutch adjustment per an earlier thread about clutch travel and footboards. He has 40+ years in the business, always new and older Porsches, older Ferraris, etc., etc. you name it being worked on, and he himself has owned a half dozen Porsches over the years. I have no reason to think anything other than he's extremely competent.
After he tightened my clutch cable (looked like about 3mm on the cable end), he said it pops out of 3rd gear now. It's never once popped out of gear in my 6 months of driving it.
No grinding going into 3rd.
I haven't driven it yet as it was on the lift when I stopped by. He thought the tightening should not cause it to pop out of gear. That seemed counterintuitive to me: couldn't the cable be too tight? or could a loose cable have hidden a problem?
My understanding is popping out of gear could be, in order of seriousness:
^ I know a lot of tech who spent a life time on porsche air cooled some very big names, they still suck. so it depends on who actually is working on it.
915 shifts like butter when done right

Good point. Shifted great when I dropped it off, so I am hoping they made an adjustment error. Unless they broke something, which will suck...
Just drove it. It violently comes out of third gear when any throttle is applied. Even if the shift linkage is disconnected. Feels like 3rd synchro and / or dogs are screwed.

Dammit.
definitely not right
a 915 done right is buttery smooth. but not many 915 are done right.
Was there something about the way the car shifted previously that made you think it needed to have the clutch cable adjusted? If the synchros or shift dogs have heavy wear it doesn't take much to push them over the edge to grinding or jumping out of gear. You could also have a clutch issue and the adjustment just put things out of wack enough for it to reveal itself.
I had a couple of gears on mine that felt like weren't sliding all the way in, sometimes difficult shifts, especially downshifts without double-clutching. This is what my clutch looked like when they cracked things open to check it. I ended up with new clutch, new dogs, synchros, and sliders. Shifts like a new, 1984 new, car now!
I felt that the clutch engagement was too close to the floor -- had to be right on the footboard to shift. I had no issues getting into gear, nothing. But I agree, I think they adjusted it correctly, and as you point out, it may have been about to break and they just happened to be driving it when 3rd gear syncro or dogs gave out.
It drives just fine in all other gears, so I have a hard time believing it's the clutch. Goes into 3rd fine. Just pops out under any load.
Just deciding if I drop it and deliver it to the 915 guy, or have someone else drop it for me.
question: looks like complete rear axle assemblies are less than $190. Other than a little $, any reason not to just go ahead and install 2 new ones while I am in there? Seems like a no brainer if mine look a little tired (haven't looked carefully yet). https://www.autohausaz.com/pn/91133203308
