How thick would you say that ceramic material inside the cylinder is? Does it fill the entire space?

It fills the entire space between the tapered sections of the can, from weld to weld. I would hazard a guess and say 3.5”?

Hard for me to tell from the pics, but did you remove the muffler to get the OAPs off and on? I've seen other DIY videos that remove the entire muffler section. If you don't have to do that, this looks like a breeze to do.

No, the muffler can stay on the car, you only need to unfasten the lower bracket of the rear section to allow for enough wiggle room.

If you wanted to do it at my place, you’re more than welcome to. If we each did one side, we could probably knock it out in an hour.

Completed this morning. Instructions were very good and it took me about 3 hours including occasional breaks. I previously did the PSE hack (6mm grub screws) to leave the valves open.

During the first short drive, I really did not notice much difference. A bit more sound perhaps, but not much. A spirited sport drive is still needed to fully evaluate the differences.

Thanks again for sharing.

I'm still trying to figure out if I want to leave it alone, do this, buy OAPs or a partial/whole system. So far I haven't really liked any of sound clips, (which I know is hard to gauge via a video, but some just sound awful to me), especially at those prices. I might just drive it stock for awhile into next year, but I may take you up on it, thanks again! Good to know it is an easy DIY project.

Interesting, I would have thought that the comment would have been more along the line of "noticeable increase in sound volume" ...

I think that your really have to hear these things in person, and both from inside and outside of the vehicle, everybody has different tastes as to what they like to hear from their own car!

I really did not find it to be that noticeable of an increase.

Thanks for posting your experience!

I definitely found it to be a moderate increase above 3500rpm, almost sounds unaltered under that threshold. Let us know if your thoughts change after the spirited drive!

Will do. Given the amount of material that was removed from the OAP, I surely expect the sound level to increase at higher RPMs.

Absolutely.

I’ve been using this as a comparison, but it’s hard to quantify the Gutted OAP vs OEM without having two cars.

Well having it not change that much is a good thing in my opinion. We don't want to diverge that much from the stock sound with such a modification. If the valves are closed, you might not notice that much at low rpms as the exhaust is passing through the baffled restrictive section. At higher rpms with the valves open, it should definitely come to life a bit more. Should be more throttle response from the get go, but it may take a few outings with a bit of spirited driving for the ECU to adjust to the higher airflow so as to feel the added power.

I think the best comparison to find would be the cargraphic link pipes versus stock.

This is all I could find, and the comparison includes a new muffler. So you could get this tone (with this mod) with just the cargraphic muffler.
