C40 Oil Discussion
#466
My lovely wife selflessly dropped by our local Autozone this morning (a place she has probably never been) to get me these pictures. You are right that C40 spec oil does not show up on their website, but I can confirm the sighting on their shelves...

I was given a pamphlet by the Porsche Dealer yesterday titled" Everything you need to know about oil". I took a picture of the "C40" page, shown below.
Seems the 5W-40 weight oil is not approved for Model Year 2021 and newer 718 Cars.......
I am located in the Southeast USA, still have not found any Mobil 1 ESP X3 0W-40 in any of the stores around me.

I disagree. This says from MY2021 and later, 718's are only approved for 0W-40, which is consistent with my MY2022 Owners manual. It seems very odd to me that there would be a difference in cold weather weight requirements by model year rather than by climate.

I stopped by my Autozone store yesterday and found the display we are seeing, was a bit surprised that it was there as my small town has very few Porsches. They only had 3 quarts of 0W-40 and no jugs at all, although there was space for jugs on the bottom shelf, so I don't know if they had some and were sold out or just never got any. I bought one quart just to have a spare and the sales girl had to go back and get the bar code to enter it as it wouldn't pull up on the cash register from the bottle code.
So it is nice to know that sources other than dealerships now have the proper oil for the newer cars with GPF's. And has been mentioned here and elsewhere, besides needing the X3 oil for gas particulate filters, the threat of low speed pre-ignition is the other reason for the C40 spec, although this is more prevalent in turbo cars than our naturally aspirated ones. But I'd say the main reason for using Porsche C40 oil is the warranty issue. My engine destroyed itself when the oil pump quit last August, I had changed the oil using Liqui Moly 5W-40, and there were no issues with Porsche replacing the engine due to improper oil usage.

I know this is the 718 forum, but on my 992 GT3 they require only 0W40 and C40 (will presumably be same with GT4 RS). I tend to think this has more to do with preserving emissions equipment and fuel economy than engine preservation.

And here's the same page in my 2022 manual...
Now, what changed between 2021 and 2022 that caused them to remove 5w-40 as an option?

Every time I read the specs I see that Mobil 1 ESP x3 0W-40 is approved for 718's from model year 2019 onward, and that also a 5W-40 oil is approved(Mobil doesn't make one).
I stopped by my Autozone store yesterday and found the display we are seeing, was a bit surprised that it was there as my small town has very few Porsches. Regarding the references to 5W-40 C40 warranty approved oils in 2019-2020 cars, perhaps Porsche approved these oils as they knew companies like Motul and Liqui Moly had them available and Mobil 1 was not available or in short supply?

No way. Firstly, they printed these manuals a long time ago. Secondly, they will tell you to go to the dealer who has the right oil. Thirdly, there are acceptable oils available, just not a lot of them, probably in part due to world supply issues.

Overview of Approved Porsche C40 Engine Oils
Many would be surprised that Porsche posts "Manufacturer Communications" through NHTSA. Currently there are ~106 Manufacturer Communications for 718s. Also listed are the two recalls for Con Rod and Suspension.
You can find them at this link: https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2021/P...Communications
Porsche issues bulletins for approved oil. Here is the latest link for C40: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...03080-0001.pdf
Also attached below is the PDF.
Don't worry that it says "up to and including MY 2020", there is another posted document that includes 21/22 718s for the C40 certified oils.
Hard to believe we're at 500 posts on oil.
If you want to run C40, you can find the approved oils in attachment...including 5W-40 approved C40 oils.

I still don't understand why the manual changed for 2022 and eliminated the 5W-40 as an option. Naturally, if you are in climates above -15*F, using 5W instead of 0W shouldn't make a difference.
I see that NHTS list and others don't include Motul yet. I think it's new. Thanks for posting that info @TXshaggy . For some reason it won't search on my VIN. But I'm having internet issues today. Time to call cable and threaten to switch to Verizon, which I think I may do at this point!
