I was trying to "browse" the site directories to see whether it has other PDF but have yet to find it.

Will report back if I get a hold of a newer one.

Porsche of North Houston stocks it.

In fact, parts guy stayed late on 12/31/20 for me to pick up a couple of bottles because they would be closed 1/1/21, and I was in need of some before a jaunt to the Texas Hill Country on the weekend.

Until a few years ago the majority of Porsche A40 approved oils were "full SAPS" as per the ACEA definitions and would fall under the A3/B4 category. However, full SAPS was not a requirement of A40 per se., and with the development of the low and mid SAPS e.g. ACEA C3, and better additive packages, the requirements of A40 could be met with a mid SAPS ACEA C3 oil of the right viscosity typically 5W40 or 0W40. Hence, recently you will have seen some A40 oils that also have dexos®2 approval. So whilst these A40 C3 oils would satisfy the mid SAPS requirement of the new C40 specification, the new C40 spec had to be developed to specify the mid SAPS requirement i.e. exclude the A3/B4 full SAPS oils. And as others have posted there is more to the new C40 / VW 511 specification than a maximum SAPS tolerance.

I believe there may be some misinterpretation of the "compatibility" between the oils. I read this to mean that the requirements are not the same and you should not use A40 in an application where C40 is specified and vice versa; exactly the same as not using an A3/B4 oil for a C30 application. Misapplication does not mean that the oil mixture in you engine will turn to custard, but rather you could in theory cause damage to you engine / emissions system. It's analogous with using an incorrect viscosity. I agree with those advocating using only a C40 oil for an application that requires it especially if within warranty period. It's not so much a case of causing damage by a half quart top up of A40, but rather being able to demonstrate, in the event of any engine problems, that any fluids added complies with the Porsche requirements.

The list of approved oils is currently short and can be downloaded from the Volkswagen Erwin site; I think someone also posted on another rennlist sub-forum. You can create an account for free to access the database and just download the complete ZIP package as the VW511 one page PDF is not listed directly on the website. I suspect CV19 may have slowed down the approval process for new oils and it's also apparent that the posted list is out of date as the Liquimoly is also approved as per following post. Below is a screenshot and hopefully Technical Data Sheets for most of the approved oils. (Edit: had some difficulty uploading the Champion and Wolf but added the Liquimoly). The availability in Europe appears to be better than the US presently, with the Mobil and Castrol readily available for ~£48 for 5 litres ($62)

VW Erwin registration to access oil approvals

Hey Steve, thanks for reminding me about your post #55, great resource, but I do have a question about the bolded statement you made, I don't see the approval for Liqui Moly you refer to? Or are you just saying that these oils meet the C40 spec as opposed to be blessed by Porsche in the above bulletin?

Thanks!

Oh, and I did register for ERWIN, but as soon as I entered Canada as a country it took me to VW America and I couldn't find the approval list and anything I did find was going to cost money to download...

Hi Westcoast. I had a closer look at the TopTec product sheet. As the C40 / VW511 is listed under the section "Specifications and approvals", this would suggest that the product has the approval from Porsche / VAG, otherwise it would be listed in the subsequent "also recommends" section along with dexos2. So to alleviate any doubt I contacted LM in Germany this morning and they replied within a few hours, confirming that The TopTec 4110 does indeed have the C40 / VW 511 approval. Not only that, but they sent me a copy of the approval letters from both Porsche and Volkswagen. The C40 approval started on July 1st, 2020 valid for three years.

I won't post them publicly as I have not requested to do so from LM, but if any RL members intend to use the TopTec and would a copy of the approval for their records for warranty purposes, I'm happy to PM them to you if the forum rules allows PM attachments. Otherwise, Pm with your email address and I will attach in response.

The VW 511 approved list on the VW Erwin database has also recently been updated to include the Liquimoly - it's dated Dec 7th, 2020. It will probably take some time before this list makes its way across the VW groups, to the Porsche importing entities and down through the dealer network.

That is totally insane, $106 for a jug of motor oil. Well at least they give you the option of paying over 6 months. I never expected anyone to apply for a loan to buy 5 qts. of motor oil, but it is a new year!

Even at that price, it's cheaper to do an oil and filter change yourself than to go to a dealer (or, probably, most indies).

Sure, You could add that, but then would you use the hourly rate as offered by a Porsche dealer, an independent or a DIY mechanic?

My point is I wash my car, add things, change tires all because I like to do this myself, this is a hobby and as such I don't include time-costing to the equation.

I would never consider the cost of my labor in my DIY work. First of all, its therapy, hobby, passion, and pasttime. Who charges for those things? (except the shrink)
