Did something change in the engine? Why would they discontinue allowance of 5w40? Apologies as I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere here.

No body knows IIRC. And yes it has been discussed in this thread (about two years ago…)

Has this been posted here before? I found it on the 718 forum. if we don't have active GPFs, does it even matter A40 or C40? My apologies if this has been discussed before in which case, please ignore. Seems to be basically lower level of addtives in the C40 oil to preserve the secondary catalysts in EU cars.

https://www.blauparts.com/blog/porsc...e-a40-oil-spec

The Porsche A40 oil specification is a Full SAPS additive (Full Sulphated Ash Phosphorus Sulfur) level formulation that supports extended oil change intervals.

C40: This is more or less a Mid to Low SAPS (Low Sulphated Ash Phosphorus Sulfur) version of the already popular Porsche A40 specification.
Most 2020 and newer Porsche models are equipped with more modern gasoline exhaust emission systems. The Porsche C40 oil formulation will optimize the life expectancy of these gasoline emission systems while still maintaining a high-temperature high shear viscosity HTHS of 3.5 mPa*s or greater.

Yes this has been discussed before and is (I believe in this thread) C40 is not just about the GPF... time to search or read the thread.

For guys with cars that take A40 — are you switching to the x4 (which covers both A40 and C40 cars) for for future engine oil changes or will you still utilize the old A40-spec oil which is readily available from various brands?

No. I’ll continue to use what I’ve been using for A40 oils. The Spyder will get the x4 next time rather than x3.

Oh man! 53 pages? I get the gist of it. As an old chemist who is pretty familiar with surfactants, oils and addtives etc. I was hoping for more technical stuff but the formulations are proprietary from what I can tell. I have an old friend who still works for Lubrizol (if he is not dead) and I guess I can ask him. BTW, I could only get through 5 pages before I surrendered. Thanks anyway.

This lists 8100 Xclean gen2 as acceptable as of June 30, 2024. I also could be into using Liqui Moly 5W40 Top Tec 4110 Engine Oil otherwise. What else are people running? If the green label Mobil 1 is close to as bad as the old black label European Car Formula that Porsche used to recommend in their cars I have not very much interest in running more green label.

Why do you say the "black label" European Car Formula is bad?

The C40 spec oils are also formulated to help prevent low speed pre-ignition, which direct injected engines can be prone to.

I don't know what this means or the underlying mechanism by which this undesirable action is prevented by the specific oil (lubricant) or the addtiives. But never mind. Thanks. I need to read up about it.

Default X3 versus X4

So should my 2023 718 Spyder get the Mobil One X4 now or continue using X3?

Before chewing me out…I did read this entire thread. I went back and did not find out what the difference is in application for the ESP X3 C40 and the new ESP X4 C40.
*I do know my car does not take the new C40 GT oil.

@GianniG60

Good job with the preventative disclaimers — you should be safe from unfriendly forum police.

I’m also interested in the answer. But for what it’s worth, I’ll just utilize the Mobil1 0W-40 ESP x4 in my 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 going forward. To me, it seems the only reason not to use it would be if you want to use a 5W-40 C40 oil, which is offered by brands other than Mobil1 (for example, LiquiMoly, Motul, etc.)

Either is fine.

X4 C40 may be used in cars that heretofore could only use A40.

@348SStb
Thank you! One must be cautious or risk a keyboard flogging for not reading EVERYTHING before posting. It looks like ESP X3 may not be returning to the Autozone shelves anyways. The Mobile One part number 127918 for the X3 is now being used for X4.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Haha, I know what you mean.

Correct, they are using the same part number. Therefore I needed to call several Autozones and ask the telephone agent to please go to the shelf check to verify the x4 because the part number will not determine the inventory, despite the photograph on the Autozone web site. In time, the x3 will all be gone and we won’t have this problem. I found it at 2 out of about 10 local Autozones I bothered to call.
