I haven't had the issue since my post earlier. 1500km now. I am being more conscious about how I shift.

Happened twice until about 350 miles. Now at 550 with some spirited driving without an issue. Will keep an eye on this.

Default Gear grinds when shifting 1-2

My Gt4 still grinds and it has almost 3000 miles it. It's tracked twice (500 track miles) ( car was broken in while picking up the car from Virginia and drive back to Boston. (600 miles)

I read on Rennlist a few years ago that there. was a trasmission recall in the 981 GT4's for a synchro weld break. My 2015 911 C2S with 7 speed also had the problem that was replaced in2016 under warranty. Here's how i knew for sure it was a synchro problem: when stopped with the engine running and clutch depressed, i could shift into any gear except 2nd gear. It would not go in except when rolling. That's what tipped my Service Advisor Off. So i got got a new tranny installed, under warranty. Im told it was a design change during mfg where a full circunferential weld was replaced by spot welds. The spot welds did not hold up well. Pretty sure 981 GT4's had the same problem. But, hought it had been fixed in the 718 GT4'S and 991.1 cars. ..

Scanning everyones survey so far. It looks like this issue isn't determined by build date. But let's keep up the good work of trying to figure this issue out.

Just to clarify - is this felt in the shifter or heard in the cabin? I have had several 1-2 shifts that felt notchy (in a bad way) as if there was a grind as I enter the 2nd gear gate, almost as if I took my foot off of the clutch too soon before the shifter was in 2nd gear. Is this the same issue others are having? I don't believe it was extremely audible for me.

Thanks,

Thanks,
It's very audible. Literally the sound of "grinding" a gear (trying to shift without the clutch in enough, etc) that you'd hear on any MT car. It sounds bad, and you'll know when it happens.
It's just a specific occurrence when you're doing the entire 1-2 shift (stick movement, letting clutch out) quickly, at high RPMs. The fact that it goes away after some regular use in almost all cases point to just some manufacturing tolerances / stiffness in the transmission when new.

Thanks,
I had a grinding noise from the transmission the two times it happened, but the shift itself felt quick and slick.

I've had several of these and they sound terrible (almost like a hammer drill). The first few times I thought It was user error, but today I definitely had the grind with a still depressed clutch. Only 1 -> 2, never a downshift and only 2nd gear.

I would be curious to understand how a synchro work and whether break-in can change the behavior.

On my car, I am not concerned at the moment. Except the couple of low miles occurrences, It hasn’t happened again. Currently a little over 2300 miles. If anything, shifting from 1st to 2nd has been getting smoother.

I have not heard of any grinding occurring in lesser boxster and caymans. Why should this be limited only to the GT cars?
