Gear 1-2 grind
#76
Still happening on my Spyder, built in mid July in Stuttgart. I’m currently around 1700 km, and it did the 1->2 grind twice today over 300 km of driving.
Has anyone asked their dealer about this and shared this thread? I hope the grinding goes away by 3000 km, else I’d be rather concerned. What makes this challenging is that the grind only happens once every hundred or so 1->2 shifts, so it would be difficult to reproduce in front of a dealer tech.

Now just above 2000 km. Hasn't happened since my initial post. I have noticed a couple times some tightness is shifting from 1-2 in the last 500 km. Perhaps it won't happen again? But as mentioned it isn't easily replicated and perhaps somewhat random or requires precise conditions to be met.

Does it happen more/less often at high/low rpms or are the odds evenly spread across the rev range? What about side-load -- going straight or making a left/right turn?

Yes, it is occasional and is difficult to reproduce with a tech, but I managed to do it with my tech on a short drive. Porsche wants a sound clip of it now and that has been hard to get according to the dealer. The sound is exactly that of changing gears without depressing the clutch.
I wonder if the clutch or pressure plate is to blame?
This is happening to a lot of people and I hope we don’t get ignored by Porsche. This is my 15th Porsche (most manuals) and I’ve never had this grind.
I have shared this thread with my service advisor, but I’m not sure if it makes any difference.
Well see I guess...

I did notice the severity of the grind decreasing.....kinda like the grinding noise is quieter and I can feel it less in the shifter. I also have less frequency as I am at 1800km. Would like it to disappear completely....

1-2 grind
Model: GT4
Grinding issue: Yes
Gears: 1-2
Build date: June 2020
Current mileage: 675 miles
Im not a purist break in kind of guy but I’m easy on it. First 400 miles didn’t go over 5k rpm. At 500 miles I brought it up to 5.5k rpm here and there. Now at 675 miles brought it up to about 6.5 RPM once or twice. No slamming gearsand no launches.
Glad to know I’m not alone. I’ve had about 6 grinding occurrences 2 of them happened at around a 5k rpm shift. I thought it was user error but clutch was fully depressed. The car REALLY wants to get out of first gear I been noticing. The remaining times happened in my neighborhood when slowing and going over speed humps. I would be in 2nd gear and come to an almost stop over the hump and shift in to 1st and that’s when I would hear the very slight grind. Hope this doesn’t keep happening!

While stopped, engine idling, and clutch depressed, try to shift into each and every gear. If there is a gear it will not going into, the synchro is suspect. That's what clued my Service advisor in on my year old 2015 C2S with 7 speed manual. It would not go into second while stopped at idle, and would occasionally grind going in. A couple times it made a grind sound and popped back into neutral while driving slowly and shifting at low RPM.
That tranny was replaced under warranty.
