We'll see how fortunate I am when the egine is out. For now I just put a fresh filter in it and dumped some regular 10W30 oil in it so it can be moved in the driveway. I need to get the 928 ready for the fall run first.

Not really fortunate, mostly knowledgeable. He knows that with engines with this high mileage you need to monitor ****. He knows weird noises (he makes a lot of them himself. lol) and he knows to check the oil regularly. Not everyone does and that is one reason they have problems.
I think it might be cam or lifter issues as he said they were magnetic. Could be chain as well, but less likely. The fact that it runs well leaves even less of a chance it is crank related.
I will be interested to see what it is myself.

If the engine is running fine and no weird sounds and vibrations it sounds like it could be the IMS bearings, or maybe the chain is wearing on something. Are your losing oil pressure under load when hot? That could be related to something else, like a cam cover seal or valve not closing when it should be.

Also curious as to the outcome...
Agree with the chain wear diagnosis if it's not really making any noise, but that doesn't add up for dropping off oil pressure. Perhaps lifters, but without noise hard to say.
Again, interested in finding out what your culprit is
Good luck and most importantly have fun

Chain or lifters is my initial guess. Either one at early stage will not make noise.
The low oil pressure may be bearing related as this engine has more than 300k (km) on it. It might be unrelated to the metal flakes.

think maybe there is some galling happening in the oil pump itself?
hope it's a cheap/easy fix for you

Couldn't stop reading this thread! I'm not mechanically inclined but am fascinated by your story. Thanks for posting!
But the rest of the tale? Can't wait!!!

Rob,
I finally finished that BMW850 about 2 months ago (took 1.5 years).
As for the metal flakes and metal dust, they are either small dust size particles or large fish scale (not as big as a fish scale) looking fragements. There is the odd sliver looking one that might be the chain, hard to tell. I don't have enough experience to diagnose a faliure just from the particles in the filter but I don't thinkit's the IMS bearing as I left both seals on it to protect it from an incident like this. There was no error codes relared to camshaft diviation so maybe it isn't the chain either. Hard to tell at thisnpoint. Wll need to open it up to see where the engine is chewing itself apart.

Large fish scale type fragments are conducive of cast iron failures. The cams would do this. The crystal structure of cast iron makes it so the individual grains get flattened out and peeled off as the lubrication goes away.
