Man did you ever peg the 996 forum. I learned my lesson and try not upset anyone there. Thats why I only post DIY's on Renntech and read/post on the 996 forum for the general knowledge and entertainment.

You obviously have great mechanical / common sense and I agree with you about figuring things out for yourself instead of accepting the mainstream high priced "fix" on the 996's.

Im joking about the goofy stuff on the forum and I seriously respect your abilities. You have my respect and admiration. Theres nothing like taking a car/truck/Jeep that someone believes is no good then restoring it into something special.

BTW there is a 928 project car in the making at a former co-workers house I have to check out. It might be worth fixing by someone like you or your friends and saving it from wasting away. I need to go by and get the exact year and type 928 it is. I have no idea whats wrong with it. Heres my latest vehicle I did. A 1999 Jeep TJ I restored for my brother. It was wasting away in a barn until he found it and I saved it.

There are a few DIYers on that forum but some are not willing to share any real information, in the fear of loosing business. I didn't want this thread to become another arguing and fighting platform so I decided to post it here first. As you can see, the thread was kept civilized and I'm happy with that. Once I put another 2500km on the IMS bearing and all looks good, I'll cross post it to the 996 forum for everyone else to see another viable option for the bearing. Something that doesn't cost a lot.

The 996's have ended up being the bargains of the century, innovations like yours will keep more on the road and smart buyers will enjoy a great 911 as a result.

Very slick of him to post this over here. Any updates or recent photos of engine/car? How is it running? Maybe you should market the $200 IMSB retrofit for the double row M96's.

First Kudos to you, Imre for this thread and the other posters who kept this thread positive and energized throughout. An amazing read for all 996 owners and more ... The Rennlist Canada boys make me proud. Merci beaucoup!

On the IMS bearing issue, Imre's experience sort of shows that these double-rows can last for a huge amount of Kms/miles. I know of a '99 C4 owner whose IMS double-row let him down on a trip from ON to NY a couple of yrs ago (160k kms then), but on average, I believe the double-rows are much longer lasting than the single-rows of the 996-2s.
From this thread, I feel a bit safer driving my original double-row 142k kms '00 C2 for awhile yet before I make the plunge either to the abyss or to a new double-row: Imre's Inc, LN, etc.
Happy New Year to all!

Excellent thread and well done Imre.......glad the engine was repairable.

Would you parted it out should the engine have been wrecked?

I'll keep my eyes open now for a non running 996

Uhhmmmm that's a good question. Plan B probably would have been an engine swap from a GM LS V8 but from a truck as those are much cheaper than the car based LS. The very last option was to part it out. I even considered putting a TDI engine in it. Now that would have been something!

Since the weather will be nice tomorrow, I'll take it out to put some more miles on it. Haven't driven it in a month.

Updated post #227 with the source and part number of the bearing. Looks like others are thinking to do the same as what was done here. For redundancy here is the BOCA bearing number: MR5204C-2RS/C3.

There was guy today that started a thread on the regular 996 site. He explained that he was planning on doing a renegade GM V8 swap, because he had just picked up a super clean 996 with a broken IMSB. He was promptly attacked and his thread was removed!

I didn't realize a V8 would even fit, and then found this thread which documented the swap. It's brilliant.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...onversion.html

The GM V8 swap makes a huge amount of sense considering how cheap the 996's have become and how expensive a new engine is. I would bet that an LS3 powered car would be worth more than an M96 powered one too.

^ This is the USAF techician? if so, as I understood it, his thread was not removed because he wants to do a GM V8 swap, it was removed because he wants to survey how many IMSB failures had occured, the justification (rightfully or wrongfully) was another member "complained" about yet another IMSB thread.

The V8 conversion is nothing new, Regegade Hybrid company has been doing that for most of the older Porsches for years, including the 996, see http://www.renegadehybrids.com/
