Default HANS...no longer approved for NASACAR & Grand AM??

While paging through the Rennlist classifieds, I clicked on a link that indicated information on the KISS (I thought it was the aux oil coolers) - turns out it for some kind of head/neck restraint system.

I'd never heard of it nor had I heard that the HANS is no longer approved by NASCAR & Grand Am.

First, is this true? Second, anyone know anything about this head/neck device?

Thanks,

Rick

BTW - here's info from their web site.
The Kintzi Safety System finally won patent approval and has been granted US PATENT #6,813,782 B2.

The first prototype has already been tested and a new revision is scheduled for testing February 2005. This is exciting news for the inventors and designers, Harry and Martin Kintzi. "We already have achieved numbers below the 4000 required by SFI and with a new test, we hope to have the final version SFI approved this year", says Harry Kintzi.

Now that the Hutchens device is no longer approved for NASCAR and GRAND AM, the market is open for an alternative to the HANS.

Stay tuned!

I think Hutchens and HANS are two different creatures.

Check out the link here regarding Robert Kubica’s shunt at the Canadian GP. You may also want to check in with Lewis Hamilton after his shunt yesterday during qualifying. I doubt the HANS device is being disallowed by any sanctioning racing body.

The text is misleading. It means "we can now be the alternative to the HANS".

I love my HANS. I don't understand why the market would need anything else.

Good clarification...their text is rather misleading on this.

I'm a HANS user...have been for a number of years and can't see anything that would cause me to change.

HANS remains THE solution for Grand Am, IIRC.

Do you have to buy a HANS helmet? Or can you retrofit?

You can add the mounts for a HANS to any helmet if you are willing to follow directions carefully and drill holes. I've done it, and it's not that hard.

Some new SA helmets come with the mounting spots pre-drilled.

you can retrofit. you or a shop would have to drill holes in your helmet to fit the hans posts.

Good. Thanks. Any mods needed to the seat (Cobra Suzuka GT) or harnesses?

I drilled my own helmet - takes 8-12" of masking tape, tape measure, 1/4" drill, 10 min - instructions are easy.

Pricing might be improved with some competition.

The Hutchens device was a claptrap of straps that went from your helmet down your back under your fanny and somehow hooked into the safety harness. Its advantage was lightweight, left it easier to turn your head somewhat, didn't make it too much harder to get out of the car in a hurry, and was a lot cheaper than a HANS. Its major criticism was that yes, it restrained your head, but it also compressed the H _ _ L out of your spine. It was a quicky interim solution due to the Earnhardt controversy aftermath. Only a few drivers ever wore it and it quickly faded from the scene.

The Hutchens trussed you up like a pig at a barbeque. Didn't attach to the harness, but it did run straps thru your 'nasty bits'. In many post-crash medical reports, the words '******** damage' were used. Really.

Oh, yeah...sign me up....
