Larry, Todd,

I like the descriptions of the tires. I grasp the numbers best.
I have a new set of Hoosiers in the garage but I know they are better tires than I am a driver so, I instinctively bought a set of streets to progress on. Now I'm convinced I will be buying at least one other pair of streets, possibly many more.
I was able to use the squealing of my tires to gauge the smoothness of my turning. This really turned out to be a good thing. I knew from 4 years of AX that the noise meant I was not smooth and not on the right approach to the apex. Maybe this is another good reason for street tires in the beginning.
Thanks for the depth in the answer.

Boston, I suspect your enthusiasm and aggression will get you through green in no more than two sessions like they did for me. Then a good stint in blue to hone the techniques. I think white will be a tough group, there are drivers in there that just arrived and drivers who are ready to leave. That is a big spread. Either way I don't think it takes THAT many DEs to get to Solo.
When you are riding w/your instructors pay attention to how they turn in, heel toe and double clutch. Each driver is a little different with different levels of ease. Fascinating.

Edit: Actually there is a really BIG difference between drivers.

I have done exactly this....on national TV.

As for the "silence" of R-comps: some are less silent than others. RA1's and Hankook 211's are relatively noisy for R comps, which helps to make them predictable, IMHO.

MPSCs will squeal like a stuck pig, especially on concrete patches.

Yes, you're right, Colin. I neglected to mention that.

I have found RA1's to be pretty noisy. Or maybe I'm just a noisy driver

I think the difference with MPSCs/RA1s vs a street tires is they wont squeal at 7 or 8/10ths. but at 9+, they are noisy (not quite as loud as a street tire, but certainly very audible).

I started a new thread on the tire issue since it is always a popular topic and we really are hijacking this thread at this point: https://rennlist.com/forums/racing-and-drivers-education-forum/334575-r-compounds-vs-street-tires.html

A good idea; I should have titled the thread more carefully to include the terms 'first time dedicated DE car' and '911' in it.
Fun to watch how threads mutate, isn't it?

RA1s are only noisy when they're still pretty new.

I know I am jumping in a few posts, and ignoring all the tire talk, but to me, what makes a great track car is "reliability/dependibility".. .I don't want to spend my weekend chasing electrical gremlins, hose/coolant problems, bad thermostats, high oil/water temps etc. I want a car that will run under the abuse of the track. To me, that would be an aircooled Porsche. 914 or 911 as first choices. Everything else (suspensions, cages, brake upgrades etc) is just gravy
