PCA and lap records
Just curious as to how much interest there is out there for PCA to track and publish lap records for the various car classes at the tracks we race on. In our area of the country, SCCA keeps track of all lap records for all classes. I know we are doing "gentleman racing" but face it, we racers are all competitive and all we get are "bragging rights" for a PCA event. It should be easy to do with the AMB system. I have found that sometimes I am racing with very few cars in my class (especially at an SCCA event) and having a lap record to use as a benchmark/goal is helpful, gives me something to run for and increases the competitive atmosphere.

The most informal way of doing this would be to review qualifying times on pca.org for tracks they've raced at. They show race results for the past few years. It may not necessarily be lap record but it get's you pretty close. You could probably even cut and paste into an Excel spreadsheet and create your own.

I second that, Mitch. Race laptimes only. 944Cup & SuperCup keep lap records for each track. These are published on the series website.
Nothing but bragging rights, but its great to see how the times keep getting slightly better every year even though the cars don't change.

I think it would be really cool to have an offical lap records view up on pca.org. I started creating a DB to hold all this. I did back to 2001ish for the tracks I go to (Glen, VIR, Mosport, LR, MO, Road America, Road Atlanta, Sebring), but then got distracted and never finsihed

Most of us know the records for our own classes. lap records almost always include qualifying. It is the ultimate fast lap for that class and that almost never happens in a race due to traffic, defensive driving etc,

Here's one sample fomr my DB. This is only race data, but I suppose that someday I could go back and pull Qualifying data as well (unfortunately it is not available for all years). Anyway, there are clearly still some data issues, as the D class record is 2:04 (yeah right). When I did this, I filtered wher applicable (for example, moving C2s up to E from F).

We are RACING out there, right? Then a RACE lap should be the fastest. Thats the way SCCA does it, but thats not gospel. Splitting hairs I guess. That 2.04 for Bavaro in D isn't correct.

Btw, the 944 Turbo Cups are just too darn fast...when they dont break, which luckily for us is rare.

My 2 cents worth...
Lap records should be based upon qualifying or race.
In qualifying you have a clean track and can run the fastest line possible.
In racing you run fast enough to stay in front, save tires and car. Some drivers run faster during races because they are being pushed to do better.

I think it should be race laps only...if you were a singer it wouldn't matter how good you sounded in rehersal...when you walk on stage that's when it counts...!

I would say qualifying counts. Qualifying is usually in the morning when its cool outside and better chance of cranking a quick lap. Qualifying times are also posted on the PCA site along with the race. This lap record thing is about the fastest possible lap, so why not include qualifying or racing.
