Reports out this morning is that he’s paying $4.5m or $500,000 per race to Williams.

Already, every day he wakes up, he must just be amazed that he still has a ride.

"Tell the safety car to speed up..."
Very occasionally, when there's a safety car period, they'll actually show some interesting shots of it.
It looks slow in comparison to the F1 cars dawdling behind him, but he is haulin' *** in that thing.

Nice offset from the God-knows-how-much Sargeant was crashing each week.

Glad they are both OK. I’m not sure I can see a reason why the Safety Car should be going WOT on a track, unless it’s responding to an actual shunt during practice; Quali or the race. 8/10ths, sure.

Of course could be mechanical but my money is on too much speed.

The safety car sometimes does a "show" and drives around at speed. Last year I was at the Canadian GP the pace car did some hot laps when there was seemingly no reason to do so other than for show.

Glad nobody was hurt. I spent 5 - 10 minutes chatting with Bernd Maylander at COTA a few years ago. He’s a very interesting guy.

As said above, the do show laps for the crowd and also a lot of laps prior to the event and prior to each session. I don't think BM was at 10/10ths, it was brake failure. There is a video of him coming into Parabolica and he points towards the apex (to seemingly maximize distance to the gravel) before intentionally throwing it into a spin to dump speed. Head on into the gravel/wall would have been a far worse outcome.

I'm sure PeteAZ will remember when we were at the COTA for the race in '14 and when walking into the track on Thursday we heard the safety car out doing laps... it was the loudest thing we heard all weekend (except for maybe the Carrera Cup cars)... definitely NOT what we heard at Indy in 2000!!!

He pulled it off perfectly. What a display of driving skill mastery and quick thinking in such a high-stress situation!

Kimi Antonelli crashes heavily on his first lap in FP1! Not a good way to start your F1 career.

He was toward the top of the time sheet, and it was going really well, right up until it wasn't.

I feel bad for him because he seemed really quick right out of the box.
