Formula 1 - 2024 Season

Not to be a jerk but both Porsche and Mercedes have just introduced sports cars with a light weight MGU-H type setup. Ironic how that is being dropped by F1.
I agree though the green push is misguided and mishandled, especially in motorsports.
I also agree that in the future driving a pure ICE car will be considered a pleasure experience like riding a horse.

The point I was trying to make is that although the concepts are the same or similar I have heard that there is not really a 1:1 correlation between F1 and road cars for hybrid engine technology. What is used in F1 is not as relevant and it more for marketing purposes.

Smaller width tires.
Shorter length and width.
50/50 engine power.
Manual override mode, which sounds like a push to pass.

The front active aero and MOM sound like the most interesting and biggest difference from prior regulations.
Good video here
Seems like a lot less downforce, less drag, push to pass power, and more active aero....

My Mercedes SUV has hybrid assist to provide more horsepower as opposed to making the car more green.

There is nothing green with that.

Yes, it’s all for performance not for “green”. The new 992.2 GTS is essentially a Formula 1 PU with a flat six motor. And the Mercedes AMG SL 45 Coupe uses an MGU-H style electric turbo to boost torque and turbo response to get ~425 hp out of a four-cylinder.
There is nothing green with that.

Partially flat floor and a lower-powered diffuser, which will reduce the ground effect and the reliance of the cars on ultra-stiff and low set-ups.

Here is a summary from FIA:
F1 will say Goodbye to DRS in 2026 with introduction of Active Aerodynamics systems.
- The 2026 cars will feature new Active Aerodynamics systems, with movable front and rear wings. Standard Z-Mode increases cornering speeds, while X-Mode on straights maximizes speed with low drag.
- They will have a three-element active rear wing, no lower beam wing, and simplified end plates.
- The front wing will be 100mm narrower with a two-element active flap.
- Unlike current cars, front wheel arches will be removed, and partial wheel bodywork will be required for optimal wake performance.
- In-washing wheel wake control boards will be on the front of the side pods to manage wheel wake.
- The cars will have a partially flat floor and a lower-powered diffuser, reducing ground effect and the need for ultra-stiff, low setups.

Dominicali has floated the idea of going back to NA engines for the formula after the 2026 regs IF, renewable fuel could be used - all this as most F1 fans prefer the sound of those engines and have long called for them to be a part of F1 again. At that point, however, 20 years may have passed after the introduction of hybrid engines and a new generation of fans who have never heard the roar of a V10 engine at 18,000 RPM may not care. Of course there's the distinct possibility that Dominicali himself will not be in charge at that time either to push for those engines as well. For me, the sound of V10's and eventually V8 engines was one of the reasons to go in person.

Nice to see that they'll get rid of those ugly half front fenders , which the drivers were all complaining about because it obstructed their vision ...
Now , let the silly season begin early !
Anyhow, it's going to be a wet weekend at the Montreal GP this weekend ,i have to be there later this afternoon to pick up my credentials
and to meet with the Porsche and Ferrari organizers ...
It's always fun to compare the Ferrai Challenge and Porsche Cup cars on the same track, supposed to be a grid of forty cars !
Cheers

I read that the 992.2 GTS only makes 5 hp more than the NA engine and weighs 103 lbs. with and no material improvement in mileage....As you rightly say, not green but a lot of virtue signaling, which in the context of this thread, has been an F1 staple for several years.
like seven seconds faster around the Ring?
It is purely a performance enhancement. I don’t think there is much virtue signaling.

Here is a link to the full release of the ‘26 regulations. I hope the electric augmentation is allowed at the driver’s discretion and not mandated by some rule like the current DRS is:

2025 GTS 532hp
The gas powered engine only makes 5 horsepower more however for whatever reason Porsche has been very conservative on the tuning.

I’m usually pretty optimistic about these things, but these rules suck. I hope they get rid of them as soon as possible.
Normally aspirated multicylinder engine on renewable fuels. That’s all they need.

Again it's all speculation, but rumors are Mercedes new engine for 2026 is supposedly very strong and the leading frontrunner with the new specs. And Williams is excited about the opportunity for 2026. Who knows if true.... Still have to deal with both MB and McLaren with the same powertrains.
