The build date is June 2016. I will have to check the mileage when I get home but I believe it is less than 4k miles. In terms of track time, I am not going to comment on that issue until the transmission has been replaced.

I have asked my dealer about this. Who knows what would happen in an actual scenario, but they said they did not believe headers to be an issue in an engine or transmission claim as headers do not drastically change the way the engine operates. He said that changing the intake and getting a tune would be different and would cause more scrutiny on the claim.

Who knows - may just depend on the particular person who reviews the claim on that day. To be safe, if you can do it, consider returning the ECU to a stock tune.

Someone on RL said Porsche had released a service bulletin or something like that on the transmission, so seems like that should work in your favor.

3 out of 5 GT4 transmissions died on a German Trackday organised by Porsche Sports Driving School, all 2016 models. This is just embarrassing.

I had an IPD and tune when my tranny went. No questions from Porsche at all.

2. I would love to have the dealer install a lightweight flywheel and clutch when they are in there. Of course I would pay for those parts myself, but I was thinking they should not charge much for labor to install since they will already be in there. Has anyone been able to convince their dealer to do that for them?

3. Anyone in the DC area who has had their transmission replaced, it would be great to know where you brought the car for the work. I am inclined to go to the dealer who sold me the car but I would still like to get a few opinions from members.
We have had about a dozen GT4 customers have the 3rd gear fail, most of which were heavily modified for track use. Not a single one of them had any warranty issues. Porsche knows this is a problem not caused by outside influence and has been very good about taking care of the issue. That being said, get some feedback on the dealer before you bring it in as some are more aftermarket friendly than others. If they are aftermarket friendly, they should have no issues putting in the upgrades while the transmission is out. If you need a source for the clutch/flywheel kit, give me a call any time at 484 883 6197 I'd be happy to send one your way for install. I'd also be happy to share any insight on our 3rd gear failures and resolutions.

Just an update on my case.

The dealer, Porsche Prestige in Montreal, were great. No issue about track use (it broke on the track).

I described the failure (third gear just disappeared on track), and the service manager explained the procedure for the fix right away. No hassles. Turns out they already had 3 GT4s repaired.

The transmission was sent to Germany for verification. That took 4 business days. They got the OK from the factory for the rebuild, and it should be ready by Friday - 2 week total turnaround.

While the failure sucks (I missed a bunch of DE events), Porsche and my dealer Porsche Prestige handled the situation amazingly well.

I'm amazed they gave the reason for the failure. Thanks for posting.

Now lets see if they do an extended warranty or a VIN list of cars?? The good thing is it looks like their admitting in a manufacturing defect, which everybody knew was the case. carl

That pdf is pretty cool to see! This is great for the owners! There's no way Porsche can " wipe their hands clean " after warranty now!

19,000 miles with 5 Smokies GT events on an Oct 2015 build. No issues.
