Another member just lost two in a row - one right after another within a couple weeks.

At this rate we may never have to pay for a trans flush.

I can also say that we haven't seen any 3rd gear failures with the new part numbers. We know that the early transmission replacements were the same and therefore had the same potential issue, which would explain why some people have had a second 3rd gear failure. From what we understand, the revised weld is similar/same to that done before they switched to the weaker weld (believed to be December 2015). We haven't seen nor heard of any 981 Boxster/Cayman S or GTS models pre-2016 (same 3rd gear) with any failures. Between that and seeing no failures on the revised part numbers, it is confidence inspiring that the issue has been resolved. Worst case scenario, Holinger has already released a factory ratio reinforced/splined 3rd gear that can be installed, and Matt's is coming soon. For any transmission work I always recommend Brian at BMC&G if you are located in the states. And hey, while you're in there you might as well throw in our shorter final drive

Let's not forget the LSD if you are tracking the car. I'll do gears and LSD if/when mine breaks. With my luck third gear will last forever.

Just a heads up that our replacement 3rd gears will be for sake Jan 2. Let me know if you need help fixing a mechanic who can install one. Not that many shops have been inside these boxes and you will want to be particular about who does the work. It’s not an easy gearbox to Service and requires making a couple of soecislvtools.

At least another 6 months until we are ready to sell it. The 3rd gear is easy because we've been making 3rd gears since 2014, just not in a stock ratio. It requires no additional testing. On the mainshaft we won't sell it until we test it.

Awesome! Thanks for the update and happy to be a customer and not a beta tester.

Yeah, we don't want to put anyone in that position. It would be nice if all manufacturers did the same. I'm hearing nightmare stories about the fitment on the other 3rd gear replacements that are out there from a company that just started making Cayman gears in the last few months. We tested our Cayman gears for a whole season in 2013 in BGB's Lunatic that Pumpelly and Norman raced in GX Rolex. They knew the risk, but they also knew the competitive advantage and were willing to go for it. They won the championship and shortly thereafter we put the gears into production. A lot of people don't realize we've been making these gears since 2014 and have dozens of sets in circulation. Never had a reported failure either. That's just the way we like it.

BUT you hand them the gears/LSD parts. do you think they would do the replacement using the aftermarket parts at no cost to you?
I obviously would NOT expect any warranty-able remedy after said installation.

you think porsche would cover the labor if, let's say, your 3rd gear goes, and your dealership agrees to the warranty replacement.

Discussed this idea with my dealer, while my tech had some sympathy for me going with Holinger 3rd gear replacement instead replacing the entire box,, no way they could get this settled with Porsche. Even tried to split costs, labour for taking the box out and in again for them, everything else for me, doesn’t work... Problem is that they only get reimbursed from Porsche for guarantee work, nothing else, no flexibility whatsoever

I don't plan on having the dealer do anything other than remove the deffective box and replace it with the new box. In between I'd take the new box to Copans, about 2 hrs. from my house. Have the gears/LSD installed and then back to the dealer. Obviously the warranty on the trans/LSD is gone.
