i thought someone posted awhile back that there was one internally? I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't one because of the lower ride height . Carl

I am also curious if this is a problem that has been isolated to the 991.1/981 or if any 991.2’s/718’s have had the issue. It would be very telling if Porsche quietly made changes to the design on the 991.2/718’s and informative to those with the potential for the issue. Has anyone taken pics of a strut tower on a 718/991.2. I would but my 991.2 doesn’t deliver until January.
i know dodge has denied several design flaws all while redesigning the next model year to eleminate the flaws they said didn’t exist.

See post 526 the towers are the same on the 991.2 GT3,GTS and 718.
I'm still not convinced that there's a bump stop in the shock??
Really need to see the inside of one!.carl

seems like I saw in this thread or somewhere else that someone had seen insides of the GT car strut and there was no internal bump stop or snubber. Too lazy right now to search for it though.

EDIT: I read through the thread and there is a photo of an inverted monotube shock of the same general design used on the GT4/GT3 981/991 cars, and the photo shows an internal bump stop (a.k.a. snubber) but when the poster was asked to confirm it was a 981/991 GT car monotube, there was never a reply that I saw.

I joined the club today. Hit a pothole and caused this.

The strut tower most likely had previous metal fatigue or even stress fractures not overtly evident. The pot hole you hit caused the catastrophic failure of the strut tower. Had you lowered your ride height on the car?
Your rim must be badly damaged as well. Good luck with having your insurance cover the repair. If you go through the thread, you can count the # of these that have failed which isn't a lot given how many cars are on the road & it's not just GT4's that are having failures.

It's dark right now. I'm sure there's damage to the rim but nothing obvious with a flaslight. There's a bulge on the tire. I never saw the pothole, dimly light highway. But yeah, it was deep for sure. I was traveling about 65 mph. I'm not particularly happy at the moment.

Suspension 100% stock. Only aftermarket item are headers. Rims have no apparent damage but im sure there's something. The car only has 3700 miles, 100% street driven. No memorial hard hits in the 2.5 years of ownership. The car has pretty much been babied.

The impact was pretty nasty. I'm interested in returning to the location tomorrow to see how bad the hole is, it must have been a crater. Unfortunately I never saw it coming.

Has anybody ever been successful with getting the municipality involved in something like this? Or is it a fool's errand?

As I shared on a similar thread the other day, many years ago I was driving a relatively new Audi A6 T in NYC and I hit a pothole or something like it. It popped the tire and cracked the wheel. When I inquired about pursuing a claim with the city, I was told that the law is that the city has no responsibility unless--get this!--they were notified about the whole at least 15 days BEFORE the incident. Unbelievable, I thought.

Sorry about your troubles...but as they say, it's only a car and it's repairable. (Easy for me to say, of course.)

Fools errand, at least in most states. Proving they they were negligent and had knowledge in advance of the pothole (and not an act of god, i.e. rain wash out) is difficult enough. Add to that the fact that most city/state/county governmental entities enjoy immunity....
