There have been rumors of a Cayman T for a while, something like the 911t, base engine + options - weight. Talk about threading the needle in the model lineup....
According to Porsche the 718 has the type number 982 and that's what I'd go with.
I bet they skipped 981.2 and went directly to 982 in order to get the Mid and Rear Engined platforms back in sych after the 911 platform goes from 992 to 994 (since 993 was already used 20 years ago).
So we'll have 984 and 994 together in just over 7 years from now...
My theory is that the 981.2 is skipped for the following reasons:
- Bringing back the 718 moniker is a significant marketing exercise.
- Switching to flat-4 turbo is a significant product update. 991.1 probably progressed to 991.2 because it retained flat-6.
Type 981.2 doesn't exist. Keep referencing it, regardless how similar Type 982 is to Type 981.1, might mislead those who are less-informed or new to the marque.
