The V10 in the CGT was from a failed F1 program and a aborted LMP effort. They recycled the part to salvage some money back from the investment.

The decision to use a V8 in the 918 was because they want the lightest possible and most compact NA power plant. The flat 6s are out of the question for their power target and the CGT V10 is out also because of size, emission, etc. The V8 from the Cayenne/Panamera was too heavy, so they use the RS Spyder race engine as the base. But they ended up changing just about everything on it, only common denominator is the V8 configuration.

Because that V8 cannot survive by itself, it NEEDS the hybrid system to drive basically every accessories outside of it's internal oil pump.

That engine was designed from the grounds up to be paired with a hybrid system, it was never designed to be a standalone engine, nor can it be adapted to be one.

Does a 4 liter engine have enough cylinder capacity to support four turbochargers? Borg Warner's newest tech are the regulated two-stage turbochargers. That would seem more likely?

All these companies claim to be "green" but the reality of it is that they save money on having you incur costs instead of them. It's the same thing in hotels - they don't care about being green but yet it'll save them a bunch of dough if they don't have to wash your towel.

Or credit card companies that don't want to send you a bill - that's not for the Earth, it's to save them the cost of mailing a statement.
