When you guys say the 928 isn't a sports car, what sort of sports are you talking about? I'm confused.
If Mark Anderson can get away with spending only $30k on a race configured 928 that beats all the newer, more expensive 911 factory racers in its class - why would it not be a sports car then?
If Mark Anderson makes third place overall (1st in his class) in a race mixed of naturally aspirated and forced induction 911s, even though he does not have a pit crew to service his car to death - what does this tell you about the potential of a 928 versus a 911 of any vintage?
In standard configuration from the factory, most 928s might have been set-up for comfortable grand touring (which they do wonderfully), but as any other Porsche, they can be reconfigured in various ways to unleash its full sports car potential. Drive a '91 GT ('91 because of the modified steering), and you might very quickly forget its size and weight.
Any Porsche can be what you want it to be. They are all engineered to be customizable for your specific wants and needs. The factory configurations are just what they think will sell in the highest quantities.
A word about the Cayenne: It might never kick-*** on a race track (even though I hear it's pretty darn fast), but can do that where the other Porsches would not look as good: In long-distance Rallyes, like Paris-Dakar. We have not (yet) seen the Cayenne's full potential...

i think the 928 is one of the greatest cars ever built period, in any classification, especially sports cars. but its just not my cup of tea personally. as far as one of the best porsche ever made... its up there in production.. but not quite the best period, there are so many race cars that top all of these. production cars id rank it around the top.. but not quite number one. id say honestly the top would be the carrera gt.. perhaps followed by the 959.. but im not a big 959 fan.. then maybe the 928, and the gt3, gt2, 993 gt2, followd by the 904, then the 356 carrera, the 911rs... and the list goes on.
regardless.. 912 is my all time favorite. but honestly not the best. people follow their hearts on this poll, not their head, and thats the down fall of somthing like this.

THE Best Porsche ever about which there can be no argument has not been made. It would:
- be able to transport four people
- excel in all road conditions (paved or otherwise)
- dominate any racing series
- be all weather capable
- be a convertible or coupe
- be light, well-balanced, nimble.
- have enough trunk space for several person-days of luggage
- have several out-right wins at Le Mans
And:
- you should be able to order it with the engine anywhere you want
- Porsche would NEVER discontinue parts for it
- Dealers would never just pretend to fix things
- PCNA would own up quickly to defects
- it would not depreciate too quickly
Did I miss anything?

There are all kinds of other cars that came and went. 912, 914, 924, 928,944, 968. Boxster
But there is one thing the 928 did better than any other Porsche. It depreciated faster than any other car Porshce made.

I will not disrespect other models by naming them but other Porsches have depreciated faster than the 928.

Flott the 993 is just an evolution of the 911 so technically its still in production.
I think the fact that the 928 did depreciate so fast made it a good car to buy. Hey its a great car, but I just dont think its the best of what Porshce has made.
Hey you can disrespect other Porsches here this is a family discussion. You might be right the 996 is getting ready to step off the curb... as it were.
Nichole when the my Uncle bought his 928S in 1985 it had dual climate control.
That struck me first when I got in. Its a grand touring car period.
You can strip it down and make it one. but as from the factory its a GT and a good one at that.

Its "Choose your FAVORITE Porsche" not "Choose the BEST Porsche" right? Love my 928, awsome for the daily drive to work and fun (except when going to the mechanic). Hoping to buy a 993 very soon to add to the collection. Will surely find the 993 more fun to drive due to a 6spd manual vs the auto tranny in the 2-8. Will probably find the 993 less comfortable and harder to get my hockey bag in the back seats also. IMO I think the BEST would be the Porsche that has the lowest operating cost. I think FAVORITE comes down to fun factor or aesthetics. I love the old 956 racing cars but would never want one for the street. I am certain one would be fun to drive. A 928 GTS probably provides the best all around sportiness combined with practicality (outside of repair costs which I have no idea about on that particular model). I think for me fun factor and aesthetics take "favorite" in my book, so its a close between the 996GT2 and 993TT. I like them about equally so I'll flip a coin. To all, a good weekend!

A 993 is a 911 variant but it is a variant that is no longer being made. So, "technically" it is not in production. The 996 is the one that is in production (for the time being). We are all water-cooled these days.

Have a good weekend and enjoy your 993!!

When I started looking for my first Porsche I only considered the 911 Turbo. I was disheartened to find that I just didn't fit in the car well and it was uncomfortable. The owner of the dealership suggested I look at a beautiful blue on blue 928S4. We drove it and i was pleasantly surprised but still not sold. A few days later I went back and he pulled the car out again and let me drive it again. A few days later it was mine and I haven't looked back since.
As Nicole mentioned above what Mark A. has done with the car is nothing short of incredible. There are no 1988 race car 911s beating newer Porsche's on the track but a race prepped 928 will do just fine if you're driving skills are up to the task. One wonders if Porsche itself new how much potential was in the 928. I'd like to think they did since over the years they've done nothing but retro engineer 911's to look and perform like 928s.
My second favorite Porsche is a 3.6 911 Turbo.
