Default Recommendation to everybody : Change oil for final drive!

Hi to everybody.
After crunchy grind noise from the front axle I thought it's time to change both final drives oil of my CTT after 165'000kms (about 100'000mls).
Please note that you have to use different oil for front axle final drive and for rear axle final drive, and it depends if the rear axle final drive is with or without differential lock.

I used porsches orig. oils... 000 043 305 04 for front axle (replaced by Porsche for the old 000 043 205 30) and 000 043 300 37 for rear axle (with differential lock). If your Cayenne has no diff/lock you have to use the front axles oil.

Now back to my recommendation...
I'll not say anything, I only show you the pics of the old oil drained out of the front axle final drive..... I think it's not nice for the diffs to drive with this kind of oil

This is on my list as well. I just did filters about 30 minutes ago. Next up are spark plugs, then the changing the diff oil...

Just replaced a front diff on my Pig after changing my fluid and having my own Eureka moment... this is a problem across the model range, from the v6 to the TTS, Touareg to Q7. Front diffs are rebuildable however and this is the best option, I believe, to sort the problem with best balance of reliability and cost.

Do the Cayenne differentials have drain and fill plugs, or must the cover(s) be removed to drain the fluid? Can the fill plug be accessed to pour in new fluid or is a pump required to fill?

Yes, there are drain and fill plugs on the differentials. Yes, you use the fill plug to fill the differential with fluid.

I did not use a pump. Made my hands and forearms very tired though.

Get the pump. Cheap at Harbor Freight. Makes life much nicer.

Of course there are drain plugs, first you get out the upper fill plug and then drain the oil from drain plug. The oil smells realy brutally bad, because of that I recommend to use a pump.
I used the
Bosch 2609200250, wich was only about 20$. Then i used 2 tubes for the pump with 12mm inner diameter, and one tube with inner diameter 10mm and outer diameter about
12-13mm
which fits with one end in the bigger tube and with the other end in the fill hole. The fill hole has a diameter at about 14.2mm (M16), but you need a smaller tube to fit this hole,
because you haven't enough space to push in the tube. Written a litle bit complicated but exactly what I've done.

After that when I finished this dirty and stinking job I throw away tubes and pump. You can still smell today (after 5 days) this stinking oil in my garage.

It's awful. I have a ratchet that fell into some gear oil 20 years ago... and it still reeks of it. I pitched the drain pan, nothing ever got the smell out of plastic.

How do you tell if the rear diff has a locker? Electrical connector on the diff? Option package?

It would be part of an option package or a stand alone option (option code I1Y1 on the 955, not sure about other generations). Unless you have a Trans Siberian or advanced off road package is extremely unlikely your Cayenne would have a locker.
There are visual way to check too. On the rear differential, the locking actuator is located in front of the drivers side output shaft; judging from the parts catalog image, its about the size of a soda can.
Or you can check by using the differential switch in the center console. If you hit the switch once, you will go into low, a second will be low with center differential locked, third time will lock the rear locker if you have one. If there is no difference in the indicators between the second and third press, you do not have a locker.

Its time to start planing for a rebuild of your front differential. If you're lucky the metal particles are from one of the carrier bearings. This will be the least amount of labor and will only require readily available bearings. If the ring and pinion have worn (like mine did at 120K miles) you will either need to be buy a new front axle assembly, or find a used one to rebuild. Unfortunately ZF does not make replacement parts available.
