At my first event after it was all done someone let this younger guy that was running a Cayman take he C6 Vette around. The course started off into an immediate slalom and the managed to make it around the first cone before losing control completely. Ended up sliding sideways for about 20', hit the curb, bounced up and over it, and then fell down the embankment into the ~8' deep washout gully that was lined with those big (e.g. 2-4') granite rocks.

How the car didn't flip when it hit the curb or when it went down the embankment is beyond me. Kid didn't even get bruised by the seat belt. The car was not in a good state at the bottom of the gully and was even less so when it was dragged back out by the wrecker.

In talking to the kid after everyone was sure he was OK it turned out that the Cayman was mommies and he'd already wreck a Boxster and Cayman of hers hooning around and she had sent him to the BMW AutoX class to try to get him to learn how to drive properly

Yeah, my experience was on a road course where the power made a big difference. I'm sure I would have had a different outcome on a tighter AutoX course. Guess I'll see when I get it out to the next local AutoX!

Got it sidwayz, then it snapped back sidewayz the other way, & couldn't recover in time.

reality check.
No kidding the call to the insurance company was going to be tough.

Something along the lines of:

"What were you doing at the time of the accident?"

"Oh, you were on a closed course, engaged in a speed competition?"

"Sir, please check your policy carefully, we don't cover that sort of accident. We will, however, suspend your coverage seeing that the car is no longer on the road."

And I can only imagine how tough the call to the wife was going to be:

"You totaled the car? And the insurance won't cover it?"

We had a guy smash up his new (to him) 997 at a PDS. He smashed into a concrete bunker. Guess he needed to take a PDS before he took the PDS!

that's why we NEVER use the words "racing", nor "Speed" when describing AutoX.

But even though we would describe it as: "timed drivers education in a controlled environment with driving instructors". ... It would still be a battle with Ins Co. I am certain they would DRILL you full of questions,... till you tripped up in your wording.

Track attendant told me my front disks were glowing red at the end of the straight!
I find that I don't drive my 968 at all because the GTS is so damned fun while being more comfortable/practical.
I have the sport line, color matched wheels, so I'm really careful not to clip any curbs!
I think that has more to do with the driver than the vehicle. While I like my 958 CTT, it would not beat my 987 around the track, not with me driving.

Exactly. Always buy supplemental track insurance. Actually, buy two of them, just to be safe. It's only for a weekend, the $200-$300 is worth it. You might be the best driver in the world but you can not control the guy next to you.

not a harsh battle, they would say no, it's not covered.

Wink

This is probably a good place for this.

I beat 27 of the 49 "proper Porsches" at this autoX with a CTT on all seasons. Notice you never hear the throttle drop. All handling.

Pretty sure I beat all the Boxsters

wow, imagine what you would do with the new CTT weighing 500 lbs less and 50 more hp and better transmission!

Nice Cole! I watched that getting ready for my day on the course. Didn't know it was someone here.

The course I ran had probably the same number of obstacles, but crammed into half the space

Thanks guys.

I just took it out there out of curiosity. I actually had a long list of complaints in my head after my first run. I then walked over and talked to two friends racing a 944 & 951. Both on race rubber. The 944 was doing a 1.27.xx and the 951 a 1.25.xx Since I was running 1.20.00 I figured I would stop my list of complaints and just enjoy the CTT.

It does much better than it feels like it does.

I've run a 958 through an autoX and it does very well in comparison to my 955.

I think it will just take a little adaptation from the Boxster you were used to.

I agree. I did it specifically to learn what the P!g could do with me behind the wheel. After my first AutoX course I swore any new car I get will go through an AutoX pretty quick. I don't think there is a better way to really learn what a car can do in day to day driving and run into an emergency situation.

I also agree that the thing feels like it's wallowing around out there, but watching the video someone shot it was just shocking how stable it is. Physics says there is no way these cars should handle like they do, but then it also says hanging your motor out behind your rear axle is pretty stupid too
