Cayenne Engine Replacement

To follow mikebast, if this happens out of warranty, is a rebuild your only option? At $10K plus? I wonder what the labor is to swap engines from a dismantler and take your chances...

any used motors i have seen are in the 6000-8500 range. To spend that without knowing seems a bit risky for me. I would rather have a rebuild done and know what i have.

Cayenne Engine
I also have an 04 Cayenne S with 50,000 miles with the scored cylinder. Porsche in Canada quoted $27,000 for engine replacement, after $16,000 a few months earlier!!
I have been told that no one makes oversize pistons for this engine - is this correct? Does anyone know where a recent factory rebuild engine can be found?
Any assistance would be appreciated

Cayenne Engines
Seems to be a problem with V8s rather than V6, and 05/05 worse but later ones still have the problem. Also seems to be worse in colder climates. Porsche will replace engines while under warranty but will not help once out of warranty even though this appears to be a design problem.

I also wouldn't doubt that 20K oil changes are part of the problem. Don't be cheap and change it at least at every 10K and use something better than Mobil 1, something like Redline or Amsoil and use an OEM filter, Mann or Mahle. Porsche knows that a 20K oil change is ridiculous but if it fails after warranty they don't seem to care. Although this won't help if your rings are installed upside down.

I have not found alot of answers to my questions but i believe i have found a possible solution to this problem if you are capable of removing engine yourself. is this the case? I recently removed mine and it will soon be on its way to a company i found in ontario for a rebuild. i will have engine back in witha 1 year warranty for well under 10k. which is a far cry from 27,000.
1) http://www.928motorsports.com/services/uschrome.php that does rebore and coating for alusil blocks. option to use original pistons 93mm
2) another option is to bore approx 1mm and get oversize custom made pistons from mahle approx 2k
94mm or larger..........however try not to bore more than 1 mm coz you may have problems with fuel management.
Good luck....cheers

Google is your friend. Search for two Kolbenschmidt technical publications - Reconditioning of Aluminum Engines and Reconditioning of Aluminum Engine Blocks. Here you will find the answers you seek.

Thanks Frank. So, after a cursory read, it sounds like many of the known problems that Porsche (and others) have been trying to address for years .. first with Nikasil (sp?) pistons and liners .. and more recently with Anusil and other derivatives. Disimilar metals will always plague these applications to some degree ... but generally, it looks like Porsche is tweaking their mix 'so to speak' on the new Panamera and Cayenne V8's to get more economic life out of their hi-performance designs.... the way I look at it is, after 125K miles, much of the rest of the vehicle is fatigued anyway and it's really all I would expect out of an engine that is putting out this level of horsepower and torque so an acceptable life expectancy for me and at that mileage point, it's time for something new anyway. Is that your conclusion as well?

IMO 10K is not an acceptable interval for ANY P-car, especially if ur using 0W-40. All oils breakdown, and some of the more expensive ones like Motul won't even go to 5K.
A 5K interval is cheap insurance for an expensive engine.

Are there any oil analysis printouts that support that statement? If so - gotta link? I'd be real interested in seeing how the Mobil-1 holds up (I know how BMW oils hold up since I've had numerous oil tests done on used and new oil..)

had my pano 4S motor replaced <6,000 miles. The cylinder was so worn you could see the rings. Rattled like crazy. The cool part was the dealer gave me a turbo as a loaner for about a month. I put 1250 mile on it.
