AUG 07 Car and Driver 997TT Test...

If Jason Plato the race car driver decides that the 997 Turbo is best for him and buy one when he can pretty much buy anything he wants, it gives the 997 Turbo highest of praises IMO.

Talking about Fifth Gear, don't forget these guys (Tiff Needell and Jason Plato) awarded the Z06 best (super) performance car of the year over the 997TT...
I also used to bash the Z06 against the 997TT, but we have to reckon that the Z06 is truly a bargain when compared against the 997TT and it's a bit faster
I still prefer the 997TT, though

No really it's not, saying that is no different that the GT500 owners saying the GT500 is as fast as a 997 Turbo around a track, simply not true. It is just quoted magazine times when there is plenty of evidence to refute that. The only way a 997 Turbo beat a Z06 to 300kph is because of a horrific launch by the Z06. The Z06 is faster plain and simple. More power, less weight, longer gearing (less shifts, better for top end pull).
My problem with the C&Dis simply that the Porsche werent represented properly which is something that happens to every sports car in some magazine at some point.

Tell me what turbo you have seen trap 127 mph stock? AWD is the most consistent form of launch for traction reasons but when traciton isnt an issue, that goes out the door and RWD acheives the best 60' times at the drag strip. At a 1/4 mile even if you take the day dreamy 121 mph, the Z06 is going 6 mph faster already and you think the Turbo is that far ahead that the Z wont catch up?
You can find videos of the Turbo getting spanked all over the internet, my claims arent unsubstantiated, they are staring you right in the face.

Then I hope you are getting a tip/sport chrono. The ZO6 won't launch as well, but when you are trying not to miss a 1-2 shift, it will pass you. The ZO6 has twice the displacement of the tt (huge explosions in each cylinder=torque), less weight, and first gear goes to 60 mph. The tt probably provides the best seat in the world for reading the rear license plate of a ZO6.AS

I dont know what fantasy world you live in but a car with 300 more lbs and less hp generally doesnt win in straight line accelration. Sorry to dissapoint you but it's the truth. The only way a 997 Turbo will beat a Z06 is a Tiptronic 0-60 and if the Z gets wheels spin.

The drag coefficient of the Z06 is 0.34, while the TT's is 0.31. The frontal area of the Z06 is 22.3 sqft, the TT is 21.9 sqft.
The hp needed to overcome aerodynamic drag is calculated as such : (Cd x Area x velocity cubed)/150,000.
At 200 kph (124 mph) the Z06 requires 96 hp to travel, whereas the TT only requires 86 hp. Considering both cars at their rated HP, the TT has 394 hp to spare, whereas the Z06 has 409 hp to spare - the Z06 is accelerating faster.
At 300 kph (193mph) the Z06 requires 363 hp to travel, whereas the TT only requires 325 hp. Considering both cars are at their rated HP, the TT has 155 hp to spare, whereas the Z06 has only 142 hp to spare - the TT is accelerating faster.
Does this make sense to you? Physics doesn't lie

eclou, love it very good point.
Here's my take on the two cars and I think i have a little back round with both that qualifies, owning 3 C5's/1 C6 and 3 turbo's.
They are both pretty damn close performance wise, you can race rarely on the streets in our big cities and track our car infrequently. So to me hair line difference in performance is not a factor. Next up, looks and quality. This can be summed up by my experiences every time I go to clubs and meet a friend who has a Atomic 07 Z. Everyone glances at the vette and says hey a Z06, then holy f*ck look at that 997tt.
Bottom line, if I want to be **** about power I'll tune my 997 for 580whp, drive a better ride and spank the Z. It's just not a priority to me at this time.

eclou,
Where in your physics did the 300 pounds that the ZO6 doesn't have to propel come into play? Drag is different than weight. You don't need to point drag into a corner, accelerate it, or stop it. But that does apply to the weight. Only in bad weather will the tt prevail.
I haven't bought a ZO6, and probably never will. But the reason I stick with Porsche is not that my tt is faster. AS
