Default 991 GT3 to Remain Manual Only

From Autoblog this AM:

"While they were at it, Muller and MacKenzie also confirmed that the new 911 GT3 will remain a manual-only affair, superseding earlier reports and allaying fears that the beloved enthusiasts' favorite would lose a pedal for the clutch in favor of a second automated one."

Shocked but happy.

Was sitting at the same table in Frankfurt and did not come away with that as a take-away...

My take was that Porsche management sees demand for manuals, especially in the most sporting models, and will continue to offer a manual as long as there is real demand for it. I don't see how that rules PDK out — unless the GTx models continue to use a different transmission than the Carrera-based cars.

The fact that the Turbo is up and running (and how) with PDK would suggest the new gearboxes can handle big torque.

In other words, it will be interesting to see how PAG plays the next GT3.

I still agree with the general sentiment expressed in response to my thread on this topic earlier in the week, i.e., Mueller was likely playing a semantics game and there will be a semi-auto option, whatever form or name it ends up taking.

It'd make very little sense to not offer PDK in the upcoming GT models. As a Porsche customer, I can't see why one would favor less options. It's time to maximize the potential of the GT cars (i.e. make it as fast as possible for all its owners). If you're a traditionalist, get the manual. If you're a younger guy who likes the idea of having the quickest transmission setup, take the PDK and don't look back.

PDK cannot be stopped. They've spent way too much money R&Ding it and something Porsche needs to keep up with the competition. It's already slower than Ferrari and the GTR. Let's lay down some Porsche pipe already.

Agree. For marketing purposes anyway, there is a lot of 0-60/0-120/laptime on the table just by putting in PDK. Glad they are leaving a manual transmission as an option, though I do hope they don't do a 6+1 gear as opposed to a proper 7 speed or 6 speed. They got it so right with the 997.2 RS with the gearing. Of course, they could use the same gearing for the 991 and add the 7th for cruising.

First time Porsche buyers are going to be getting a hell of a deal with the 991S, it will outrun almost everything preceding it (if you believe the N-ring figures). Prior, the GT3 could at least be counted on to be quicker than the last, current and next generation S.

Was seriously considering picking up an 11 or 10 RS. Will hold out now till 2014.

Should have both. I hate automatic gearboxes, but those dual clutches are just awesome.

I'm really glad that Porsche is sticking to its guns and offering manual only on the GT3. Yes, the PDK is a great gearbox but for enthusiasts and Street/DE drivers, that's a No-no.

Now, they need to get rid of that crap sunroof on the GT3...

Leave that for the Carrera and Turbo guys.
