2004 996 TT with 63,700 miles - Happened accelerating hard to 80 MPH getting on the toll road when leaving the final day (Nov 2nd) of the USGP last year... The drivers side oil cooler fitting blew out and quickly relieved the engine of most coolant. Was able to limp to the next exit and have now pinned all lines. Found that the fitting on the drivers crossover assembly was also loose and if it weren't for the hose having no where to go it would have likely popped as well.

Going in for pinning and Sharkwerk pipes on Wednesday... gonna clean and detail the engine compartment while the engine's out... one less thing to worry about!

Since I bought my car used, 2011 GT3RS, and the previous owner is deceased, Paul Walker, is there any way to see the coolant lines to determine if they have been upgraded without pulling the motor???
Thanks

A couple of the fittings are easily visible in the engine compartment. It should be obvious if they have either been welded or pinned. If those are taken care of, it would be reasonable to assume that the others are as well.

There are 37 pagers here. I've read about half of them. Most of the problems seem to have ocurred in the 996 and 997.1 versions. Would be great if someone who has followed this thread since its inception can summate and make a rec to those of us new to GT3.

This issue has appeared on 997.2 cars.

If you have a 996 or 997 with a mezger engine and you track the car, at all, get your lines pinned or welded. If you track and have not, pull coolant out and put in water and water wetter.

When lid is open, look straight down, under the alternator, to the lower left is the water pump and water pump distribution jacket that has most of the pipes. You can see 2-3 of them, about 2" in diameter that if fixed will easily be visible.

This is what it looks like if they are pinned. Mine were done by Alex.

*Water + water wetter only helps the other people get back on track sooner since cleanup is quicker (water + water wetter evaporates, coolant has to be soaked up), the difference between W+W and coolant has no effect on the probability if you will crash your car or the cars behind you will crash WHEN (not if) a coolant line blows!

No.

Coolant is slick as hell. Water wetter is not.

Won't save a line from blowing but will minimize others crashing car from a lack of your maintenance.

Agreed that coolant is much slicker... But the change in CoF between your tires and the track with either water+WW or coolant (50% water/50% Ethylene Glycol ) is still more than enough that the probability of you loosing control and/or those behind you doing so is still not in your favor.

I have seen cars spin and crash behind a coolant line blowing with water+WW.
Sure if a car passes over either while going in a straight line you will probably be fine, but if there is some steering input, like if you were trying to avoid the cloud of steam or the damp spot on the track (that's the average persons instinct)... Bye bye!

I'm not attacking you Spyerx, pardon me if it came across like that...

I'm in favor of people getting their cars fixed...
What I am not in favor of is the false sense of security conveyed by saying pin/weld or run water+WW and everyone is happy!

I have proposed that our PCA chapter require all GT1 engines be pinned or welded to go on track... At the same time I have proposed we facilitate pinning engines by hosting DIY assisted sessions! (I am aware of the liability obstacles)

Default Catastrophic Coolant Hose Coupling Failure Registry

Hi,
2001 996tt tip 118800 miles. Had the windows down at failure so I smelled the problem and watched the temp gauge start to rise, so pulled over before over heating occurred.

Having mine welded, work is being done by Eisenbud's in Denver.
