In other intercooler news...

Sets of $999 Chinese knock-off intercoolers are showing up on certain bid sites. These are nothing new, several vendors have been selling these for 2x the price for years (fun game: see if you can find out which ones). Another $1000 off and they'll be priced for what they're worth.

Here are the (BS) specs:

This is a bar plate twin intercoolers for Porsche 911 996 Turbo 2011-2005
The heat transfer efficiency is 25% higher than factory one
There are right and left side intercooler included in this list
Every intercooler do high pressure leakage test under 4.5 bar before package
Core size 358mm x232mm x90mm
Could handle 750Hp+ engine cooling work
Pressure Drop less than 0.8%

Item location: 上海, 上海, China

I have been looking for about 2 years now and still couldnt tell which are the best intercoolers. Waiting for member GTRNick intercoolers as they seem to be promising or tb993tt or earl could tell us which ones to get.

If money is no object, I think its been pretty well proven that the best bolt on air-air intercooler for these cars are of the hand made aerospace core-based variety from Secan or CTR. Beyond that, the waters get muddy fast. I haven't seen any of the myriad of coolers under ~5k USD showing data trumping the gt2rs/997.2 coolers. Many use Bell cores, a few Garrett, and a few use the knock off garbage, none of which have proven any better than Porsche's latest. There may be some other European options that do better (Blizzard?) but data is somewhat limited. My advice is to start with the GT2RS coolers and if you're not happy, sell them and move up from there (which, unfortunately, may be a pretty big price jump).

...or look into chemical intercooling

errrr GT2rs
I doubt you can do much better, at least for power levels of 500-800hp (european)
I am just 1 of the few people the conclusively proved that with numbers.

George , from what i understand you have a water spray system for your GT2RS coolers, I wonder how much does that help lower IATs?

It looks like its working great for you setup , but not in my case ripping through the gears 1st till 4th redline IATs are 58Deg @ 18deg ambient , i guess maybe because of diffrent tuning strategies... or is it the water spray thats doing the magic?

Thats an extremely high temp gain for a 1-4th gear romp. What setup & how much boost are you running? Are you sure there are no boost leaks?

RS tuning 600hp DME + Decat Europipe exhaust

1.55bar of boost

No boost or exhaust leaks

My IATs 1-4th gear redline (235kmh) are 58 deg with 997.2 coolers , if you look at the data posted by skand on Georges car as reference to my results on post 5 @ http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...game-over.html

you can see the datalog posted for the 997.1 ICs @ 230kmh 20 deg ambient reach 63 degrees IAT which is a little higher than my IATs with the .2 ICs at this speed.. and that was starting from 95kmh so i presume on third gear? which means lower heatsoak since there was no 1st and 2nd gear loading.

Whilst with the 997.2 ICs IATs at 237kmh is 45degrees @ 16 deg ambient.. and that was starting on third gear .... and i presume sparying the ICs with water? + bigger vtgs + ported engine = lower IATs

From what i understand when they conducted the test this was with 100octane fuel + 104 octane booster? My results are on 97 octane..

I am not bashing the 997.2 ICs i am only sharing my experiance which is what this thread is about.

Yes they are better than the 997.1 but our cars run stupid high boost plus the VTGs produce alot of heat compared to normal Turbos... also on the track they heatsoak faster than the 997.1 ICs on my car..

A FWIW, RS Tuning said they tested the GT2RS intercoolers on a stock GT2RS on the autobahn doing repeated runs up to 300kph, low 20s ambient and they had IATs in the 70s.

As TTurbine says and as we discussed loads on here the VTG engines produce loads of heat and (unless you have access to Nick's special Champion cold fusion technology) the IATs are always going to be much higher than tt engines with conventional turbos.

As I stated in the other thread my testing shows about 700PS (DIN at 20C ambient) as being maximum hp with VTGs using all best hardware and 3.9 litre and all due to the higher IAT....

Toby, I've reported your post as harassment. Quite frankly I'm fed up with your tone towards me. Good luck with your car, 700whp is definitely not the upper limit of VTG power. Your data conclusions suggests exactly what your build is- garbage in, garbage out.
