The same experts blessed with the same talent as Hamilton (only a fool would deny that Rennlist is THE breeding ground for future world champions) will then proceed to Willow Springs , Laguna or Buttonwillow to smash lap records after lap records, afterall ,that is the least the overweight/bald GT3RS driver brigade with the help of Viagra can do for the community. During those intense moments it will also be discovered that the immense wax collection in possession of said experts , when properly applied , also reduces lap times. Needless to say while engaging in this dangerous " beyond the limit" driving in stylish Stand equipment same experts are still able to produce qualifying laps in bunches ONE handed while the other hand is trusted to warrior the keyboard (Apple of course) to give live feed to net forums.
I feel soooooo blessed that I can witness this true milestone of the car revolution.

Those kinds of cars made the Porsche brand. What do you think will happen to the brand when they keep making fat pigs?
And nobody here is claiming they need the "dream car" to set lap records. They want it to have fun.
A lighter car is more fun than a heavier car no matter how much fun you make of it.

More fun in more ways than one. Although on the street you'd probably never tell, the second you take a car to the track it starts to feel softer and heavier as you throw those thousands of pounds around bends and demand that the poor brakes stop them. It is simply more fun to toss something around without all the heft. From a practical standpoint this will make all your consumables last longer too, saving time and money. Laptimes were not mentioned above.

I built a 300 lbs lighter 996 GT3 (around 400+ lighter than a 997 GT3). It has a radio, A/C, power steering, power door locks, power windows, power mirrors, and it is more comfortable on the road than the stock 996 GT3 due to the upgraded suspension. If I did it, Porsche could do better.
With the updated ring and pinion gear, the close ratios between 3rd and 6th, and its weight, this car has the same pace than the new Z06 on straight line, and it laps the local tracks faster than most cars, including modified Vipers, Vettes, retired World Challenge cars, GT3 Cups, etc.
A very good driver in GT3 Cup is faster than a very good driver in my car, but those 1.5 secs faster times per 60 secs track come at the expense of a trailer, towing vehicle, slicks and limited hours for engine/transmission, also there is no chance to drive that Cup legally on the streets.
Porsche can build a comfort GT3 with a sunroof, Navi, Bose stereo, sound insulation, etc, but they should build the RS staying loyal to the original concept, which today is still a valuable concept.

The fact to me is, if Audi can sell the R8 which has a complex dry-sump V8, 4 -wheel drive and all aluminum body construction done in relatively small numbers for around $110,000, and BMW can sell the next gen M3 with its gorgeous V8 and carbon fiber roof for around $60,000, Porsche should be able to deliver a 2 wheel drive all aluminum bodied 911 with a carbon roof and 6 cylinder engine for the current cost of a GT3.

As the owner of a new RS as well as a 996 GT3, I feel the same frustration as most on this post! But I will stop short of saying the Zo6 is a better automobile due to weight and performance. I will reserve my opinon until I see thousands of track miles on the Vette without breakage!!??

Porsche has their work cut out for them. Believe me, it will take more than deleting a sunroof!

The key is , any car can pretty much be made lightweight but does the cost justify it? Marketabiltiy becomes easier? These are some of the things car makers hv to think about.
Remember, Less is More , ie. Lesser weight but u pay More for it..Your other half will think wtf?
I think at some point, there should be a reasonable balance. We drive a road car. We still desire a good level of comfort and daily driveability. For the kind of performance RS can do vs its major rivals which are far lighter in weights ( such as F360CS n Superleggera ) and cost alot more, I think RS is perfect.

I think that including the dense stuff that is sprayed under the car and in doors, then painted over, you will have a much larger number than this. On a 964 RS approximately 75 pounds was saved removing this, at a cost of more noise.
Shut the door on a 964 RS or USA Cup and it goes "tink" instead of "thunk".
I think it was Ford who defined in a study that many average people rate a car's quality in the showroom by how the door sounds when closed, I can remember my dad doing this. The marketing department would have to loose a battle for antiresonance materials to be dropped from production.
The market has to be educated on how "less is really more" if performance is the goal.
