So not only the driver is overweight but so is the car. Where is the upside to this?

A 250 lbs man is going to have more fun in a 2800 lbs car as compared to a 3200 lbs car. Why is asking for a lighter car bad then?

Not that I don't agree with you, but why should they when they are selling at 50k over sticker?

Same reason Ford shouldn't stick Shelby badges all over everything, and Ralph Lauren shouldn't have more outlet stores than retail stores in major metropolitan areas...it devalues the brand.

If future RS models continue to be just paint and bodywork variations, eventually they won't be anything special at all. Had Porsche spent more money on lightweight materials, made it 200lbs lighter and priced it $10k higher, weeded out some of the speculators in the process by making a more focused car, it would still be in high demand but also retain its image. Remember, Porsche didn't get any of the money over MSRP.

My belief is that it is less expensive for Porsche to add 35hp than to remove 350#. And they know the market responds to power.

Look at the company the 2700#/260hp 964RS keeps at the 'Ring.

In truth,if my source is correct, then there are more differences in the RS and the base model than appears in marketing info. Many RS suspension components are Cup part numbers unlike the GT-3.

I'll ask my source to compile his list...and see if he'll comply.

Even if true,I'm not sure it makes a big difference, my tiny brain is still spinning from the data input I received yesterday. But one thing is for sure, a great seat-steering wheel spacer in either car is untouchable on the track.

The 997 RS should have had an RS America badge on it. It is what it is. Marketing at it's finest.

On the track the car is a pig, fast and fun but feels very heavy. Cup car or dedicated track car is a total different ball game. I am looking forward to trying out the 964 RS on the track. I bet it will be more enjoyable.....

There is no subsitute for a track car on the track and there is no subsitute for a GT3/RS on the street.

GM put a lot of Carbon fiber on the new Z06, even the fender liners are made of carbon fiber. The car got a way bigger engine, and it is still light.

Porsche removed carbon fiber from the 996 GT3 RS to create the 997 RS, which only carbon piece is the expensive rear spoiler. I agree that a 3,250 lbs RS is way too heavy. That's not far from the 997 Turbo weight.

The 997 GT3 RS can get below 2,800 lbs with a full interior. Porsche could charge another $20k for the RS and bring it down to 2,800 lbs, but they don't need to do it, because the porky car still sells well.

, it's fun. It's not for lap records, it's for a more fun, better handling/accelerating/braking car that is easier on brake pads, rotors, and tires. And at least the bitching is somewhat productive with more ideas on how to make up for the factory's swine-esque choices.

3250 - holy crap!

that is 700lbs more than my 92 cup, Which does have carpet and is street legal, and can drop another 100lbs w/o any thing that you can see being done to it.

i'll give you the power advantage, but at the parade another 92 cup (street car again with light mod's on RA-1's) beat a full Auto-x prepped (by Fordhal) 996 GT-3 on slicks, it was a local car here and trailered down, it is an auto-x/track only car.

Not true, the Z06 fender liners are just regular plastic, same as on the regular Corvette. The only carbon fiber used on the current Z06 is for the front fenders themselves.

We also have carbon fibre floor panels !!!

In addition to the use of carbon fibre for weight savings...

the C-6 Z06 uses:

Hydro-formed aluminium frame

Magnesium engine cradle

Magnesium roof frame

My car on street tires (run-craps)...corner balanced and with two piece front rotors weigths 3114 lbs. with ~ 5/8 tank of fuel. It has the 2LZ premium option package. Set up for the track... we are under 3100 lbs.
