It varies based on distance. Sometimes the cars are non-transferable for whatever reason. The transport fee is non-binding too.

Transport fees can be more than $250... I've seen them as much as $450. No obligation to buy the car, but you pay the fee either way.
Sometimes they have 'free' transport to bring certain cars into certain markets. For example, you can bring any AWD Carmax car to Colorado for free. I'm sure it's not intended for 911's, but you can use it to bring in 4S's and Turbo's for free.
On the non-transferrable cars, it is usually due to electronic titles. If the car has an e-title, carmax evidently can't transfer it across state lines until they receive a physical title which can take a week or two. Kind of sucks, no real way around it. You could possibly fly in and buy it locally, but I think with an etitle, again, it has to be sold to an address local to the dealer. Possible tax implications even if you have an address you can use.
One Carmax tip... Hitting 'Free Hold' locks up the car for you right away, but it's intended for people looking at the car in the current location. Hitting 'Request a Transfer' does NOT lock up the car. It sends a message to your local Carmax dealer who will call you and try and arrange things. If the car is a hot deal, don't use 'Arrange a Transfer'. Someone else can hit 'Free Hold' after you, but before the local salesperson arranges things and snipe the car from you. Either call right away or hit 'Free Hold' then call and explain you really want the car transferred.
Going to be in the market for my first pcar probably in the next couple of weeks.
Considered a 996TT but I think getting a 997 is a better bet right now.
Really would like to find a macademia or cream white one. Budget would ideally be ~$40k
Welcome!
I looked at 997's, 991's, 997TT's and 996TT's, ranging from about $35K to $75K for my latest Porsche.
Ended up picking up a 996TT. Absolutely the best performance bang-for-the-buck out of the bunch, but even the youngest 6TT's are 13 years old, and the oldest 17! Definitely would suggest being a hands-on person for minor service and repairs or setting aside a healthy budget for service just due to the age. Also, $40K is pretty much as low as these sell for, with nicer cars easily topping $50K. That said, I think they will depreciate the slowest out of all the above, and actually have gone up a fair bit in the last year or two.
A nice 997.1 for $40K is definitely a realistic goal, but also lower end of market unless you can live with a tip convertible. Highest prices for manual coupes... Be aware that many '05's have the same M96 engine as the 996, with the higher failure rate but easier to replace IMS bearing. Some consider it an advantage, but I'm not one of them.
At your price range, I'd focus more on condition and service history rather than looking for an unusual color you love. But Macadamia is kind of a love-it or hate-it color, so if you do find one the seller might be motivated.
until I dispose of a couple motorcycles. Lifestyle change coming up.
NOOO DONT DO IT!!!
Just kidding, I am selling my Panigale to afford the right 997.2 6MT GTS or Turbo...and was considering selling my other 2 bikes to buy a 991.1 GTS but that would be dumb of me. I love 4 wheels...but 2 wheels move the soul.

Thank you guys for keeping this thread alive. Already started a spreadsheet with a few of these options on it.
I know you said your budget is $40k, but Macadamia is pretty rare in 997s and I've never seen it on a 996. A well optioned and well priced Macadamia 997.1 turbo 6MT cab just hit the market. I went from a 996T 6MT coupe to a 997T 6MT cab and couldn't be happier
2008 Macadamia with black/sand beige, 6MT, PCCBs
38k miles $59,850
Pictures also show a built in Passport radar detector and aftermarket intercooler hoses. Intercooler hoses aren't typically a 1st mod, so there's a good chance it might have intercoolers, exhaust, and/or tune.

Getting rid of my EBR 1190RX track bike and the street bikes =(. Have a few injuries, 13 pins and a plate in my knee and 7 pins and a plate in my arm, that aren't coming along as I had hoped. Easier to drive a flat six =)
I do have a coworker with a 2005 997 2S 6spd, 40k miles, silver on black that he is considering selling.
Perfect starter Porsche... Some options don't mean much to me on these cars, but others are kind of nice. Does it have Sport Chrono? Sport Exhaust? Sport Seats? Full Leather? Coupe or Cab? Fully up to date on service?
Very good chance an '05 will have a M95 IMSB engine, you can read up yourself on wether or not that is acceptable to you.
I'd say $40K for a super clean, lightly equipped '05 is about right. If it's got all the right options, right color, amazing condition, etc. maybe $44, no more than that.
I've seen higher mile (65k miles) '05's sill in nice shape dip down into low $30's for reference.
Oh, and I kept all my bikes, though admittedly I ride much less than I used to!
Ha! I might go buy a new base 1299 panigale this weekend. Love my C4S but miss having a super twin. With Ducati going to a V4 it's last chance to get it. Also have eyes on a 2013 R model.
