The new 911 Carrera GTS
#31
Hold the phone. Carrera S standard features that are optional on the GTS:
650 • Electric slide/tilt sunroof
482 • Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM)
608 • HomeLink® (programmable garage door opener)
454 • Cruise control (automatic speed control)
810 • Floor mats
870 • Universal audio interface (iPod®, USB, AUX)
I'm not sure about bluetooth, but I think this is what might enable it:
619 • Mobile phone preparation
Its not specifically listed as included or optional. Quickly having second thoughts as once you remove those options, you've got a price roughly equal to a full MSRP S + X51 + 176 (PSE).

On my spec sheet this option was for Bluetooth Phone Interface and the number for the option was the same, not as listed below:
619 • Mobile phone preparation

Is it me, or does the steering wheel on page 18 of the brochure look like it has paddles instead of buttons for the PDK?

If you have centerlock tools and centerlock track wheels already it might be an advantage. For the most of us who have lug nut drivers and regular 5-bolt wheels it's terrible. Centerlock is really an annoying gimmick, I'm not doing pit stops, with an impact driver it takes about 15 seconds to get a normal wheel off.
... but I can't really complain about this package. This is really the rare Porsche special edition that actually makes me want it. It's all action, good value, it's exactly the car I would want if I was buying a new one right now. I'm very jealous of anyone getting one, which isn't something I've felt about any other car since I got my 997 (I hope she can't hear me; I still love you baby).

From whats said on the website, its a better value than the 997S. It comes standard with sport exhaust, centerlock spyder wheels, alacantara trim, power package, and wider track for only 10 grand more. Maybe the pdk is a no cost option as well, in which case clearly the better choice.
alacantra trim--yes
power package-yes
I think that would do it for me....but I don't think its a reasonable step up from a 997.2 if you already have one unless you just HAVE to have the best, newest, and latest and/or you've got $$$ to burn. Will be interesting to see how it slots in when the new 911 arrives. 911 base, 911 S, 911 GTS, 911C4, 911C4S, 911 turbo, 911 GT3, 911 GT2 and Carrera GT...now thats some offering! VW bosses must be about to explode!

Burning Brakes
It's a socket and a $1000 torque wrench. When it's being torqued down, you need someone in the car with their foot on the brake or you'll just move the car. The wrench comes in three pieces and assembled is about 4 feet long.
If you wanted to use a portable air system to do 4 tires instead of using the manual wrench you'd need a setup similar in power and capacity to those used by a professional racing team.
Bottom line is that it's a completely stupid system and much like PCCB will garner much attention from the guys that like the gimmicks but will quickly realize it's ridiculousness and 'upgrade' to a 5 bolt system (hopefully studs and nuts as even the bolt idea is silly).
As for the GTS... SWEET IDEA!

Plus you only get to choose from one or two vendors when it comes to buying your track wheels -- and they aren't cheap or easy to find. I'll pass. For now, at least.

Interesting that torque figures for the GTS and regular S are identical @ 310 lb/ft. Which means that while that extra 23hp will be good for a tiny bit more top end, you're not going to notice much if any difference between the two in acceleration. Porsche claims .1 of a second to 60 with PDK.
So let's see; take a huge depreciation hit on my '09 S with SPASM, sport buckets, PSE, PDK, SC, special leather, etc. on which I got a good deal, to buy a new GTS at a price premium because my car is theoretically .1 slower? And feel bad just because I don't have the very latest iteration of 911? Don't think so. If that were the case, knowing the history of evolving Porsche models, I definitely bought the wrong car!
OTOH, if I didn't already own a late model 911 and was in the market right now, this looks like a terrific package.

The 991 is sure to be a better car in many respects and it is just around the corner. Why not wait and see what that has to offer before going and buying a car that will be "previous generation" in just a few months?
Like many have said, this seems like a marketing strategy to offload 997s.
On the other hand, I believe we are hitting the law of diminishing returns with HP. I don't track and, as a result, I have no use for 400+ HP. Who in the world puts 400HP to use on regular streets?
New car models eventually need to start competing on things other than HP.

The "deal of a lifetime" on the last gasp of the 997 run will quickly turn into 5 years of trying to tell yourself how smart you are not having bought the 991
After a few years, you might even believe it.
Porsche designs evolve.
Why buy the last of the old design ?
If you are wrong, and the 991 isn't an improvement, there are more than enough 997s to choose from.
Patience.
Besides..you get a whole new forum.
