It's could be your key lost its mate to the cars security system.
I had that happen to my Cayenne and had to have to towed to the dealer for them to fix it.
The other thing with the 996 is the ignition switch breaks. I think the 997 uses the same switch.

Update...
The dealer called this morning at 8 and asked, "Sir, can you tell me exactly what happened?" I told him the story and then he says, "I just went out there and started the car." WTH???????????? Of all days, it had to happen on my baby's first birthday. So far the differential diagnosis... 1. bad connection somewhere, 2. neutral switch, 3. Key programming, 4. I'm an idiot
Answer to the mystery shall be revealed later today...Stay tuned.

Sorry to read the troubles you had.
I would think, your drive should have been enough to charge the battery.
Unless the alternator has a problem but then if it were the case, you'd have had no juice to operate anything electrical in in the cockpit and you'd have heard a weak cranking or a click/ attempt at it.
Keep us posted.
Transponder in the car/ key? If the battery had enough juice but the car wouldn't respond to the car then it sounds like the immobilizer anti-theft system.

I'm not surprised that it started. It's Murphy's Law. You want it to start, it doesn't. You have rattles, and when you bring the car in, it's gone.

Years ago, I had an Audi Coupe with a similar problem. By the time it was towed into the dealer it worked!! Turned out to be a loose Neg connector on the starter! Once that was fixed, never a problem again.

It could be one of the battery cell is dead. It happened to my Boxster before, everything else work accept starting the car....after fueling up. Ask the dealer to do load test on the battery.

Security system bug. This has happen to me more then a few times. Turns out that were I park at the airport long term, the RF from the radar system in this one section seems to interfere with the systems. I know a long shot.

Between your DOA incident & my apparent voltage related PDK Transmission Fault, maybe I'll hold off on installing the SmartTop. Seems like the '09 electronics don't need anymore distractions.

I have a 2006 C2S. So far I've had the battery AND alternator fail.
The dealership replaced both under warranty. That was last Oct. In Jan., the alternator failed and the car had to be flat-bedded in to the dealership. They diagnosed the problem as only a bad alternator. Then, a week or so ago, the alternator failed again.
So, now I'm on alternator number three.

My 2007 would leave 1 parking light on in front when I turned the car off sometimes. Dealer could never figure it out. Weird too.

mdrums, if you leave the turn signal lever "on" i.e. either up or down it will leave a "parking light" on - the side market light. You also get a warning chime when you turn the key off and open the door. Could that explain your problem?
