Default What car would (realistically please!) make you consider chopping in your 997?

Guys,

As the heading suggests, realistically, both from a financial and practicality perspective, what cars would make you consider trading-in the 997S??

I have a 997 GT3 on order - so that's one I'd obviously consider - the 997TT would be another (one on order).

But I also find myself looking at the ever dropping prices of Gallardo's lately - and attempting a bit of rationalisation as to why they would make a good buy - "you know that four wheel drive on the Gallardo would come in REAL handy" etc. etc.

The new Aston AMV8 will be out here in UK by the fall - thats also a contender (albeit that there is now a three year wait list) - as would a used F430 in, maybe a years time when prices will have dropped to realistic levels.

I have to say that if a 2+2 is not necessary, the new AMV8 is amazing.

I would trade my 997 in for a Ferrari F430 in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

I think the 997 TT will destroy anything else on the road in the same manner that the 996 TT and the 993 TT did before it. Never underestimate the supercar crushing ability of a Porsche 911 Twin Turbo.

you're right, the 997 TT might be a killer.

Is that all that matters? If so, go out a buy yourself a new Z06, mod it a bit and it will spank the 997 TT for less than half the price.

He's not looking bang for buck here....he's looking for the total package. Luxury, Performance and exclusivity. Lambo, F430 and Aston Martin are the names he mentioned. Of those 3, the 997 TT would beat all of them. It can be a daily driver (not so with any of those cause depreciation will destroy the value) and beat all of them on the track(maybe not the 430 but close). Heck if he was just looking for performance...I'd tell him to get a Caterham. It's all about context.

I can agree with that last statement. The Lambo's, Ferrari's are not for the daily drive. If your context is a third or a fourth car, the decision is different than if it is your second. The other question is 2 or 4 seats.

If it is the second car: 997 TT

if it is the fourth car: now is getting difficult 997TT or Enzo or the Aston Martin, although I would argue the maintenance on that one.

Somebody mentioned the new Z06. Having been driving a Corvette for 3.5 years, I would not have that on this list. It is a great car for the money, no doubt about that, but in another league.

Ferrari 430 is sweet but not to drive every day. You can't beat the Turbo or 997s. Porsche's are the best bang for the buck interms of driving and luxury and the whole package.

If I hear one more person say get a Zo6 and spank a Porsche I think I might become ill....All of us here could buy 2 or 3 Z06's if we wanted to but get real it is no where near the whole package, even if it had 700 Horses!!!

Get ill! Do you really believe Porsche is about luxury, exclusivity and the whole package? Porsche's are a dime a dozen. They are more plentiful than the Z06 and probably Corvettes. The 997 looks like a 993 and the new 986 which is cheaper by almost $40,000. The new 997 has a marginally upgraded interior from the cheap looking 996 interior.

Resale values of Porsches in the US are abysmal. As soon as you take delivery of a Porsche you experience a minimum 10% depreciation. If you factor in depreciation Porsche is probably the most expensive sport car on the planet.

The only thing Porsche gives you is performance BUT only if you are willing to pay for it. The S with a modicum of options will run close to $100,000. The standard 997 has the same performance as the 996. The base Corvette C6 ($47,000) runs circles (Car & Driver used the verb trounce) around the 997 S and the base 997 could not outperform the $40,000 350Z.

So where is the total package?

Get a clue dude...

If you get the S with a few options you are looking at 85k. I drove one set up for 83k and it was awesome. You don't need all the options and bells and whistles. That car for 85k is worth the little bit more than a Z06 in every way shape and form. 70k for Z06 reportedly....I suppose you will tell me that a GT3 is dumb at 110k over a Z06 too!

I agree, my old 996 was cheap inside but even at that it was nicer than the piece of crap interior and quality of a Vette. My 2000 996 still had people coming up to it and saying wow! I doubt any Vette except for a classic would do the same...GM sucks at interior fit and finish and always will!

The 997 is a ton better in interior quality and you must not know what you are talking about on this one. Everyone I know has said that my new 997 looks like a million bucks inside compared to my old one.Compare the 997 interior to the Vette...laughable.

You must be crazy to think that Porsche's are the only ones to go down 10% when you drive them off the lot! You better learn your facts before spouting off at the mouth about values too. If you buy one with bells and whistles you will get hurt more than a base car. I lost 7k on my 996 over 2 years of ownership.....Does not seem like a resale problem to me, I sold it the 1st week!

If you are worried about losing money on a new car than you should move to Northern Cal and buy a bike for you travels...

Looks like a lot of people are willing to pay for Porsche performance and luxury as evidenced by the sales figures. The 997 is totallly different than the 996. Maybe you should drive both before making such off base statements.

I guess I would go get a Dodge Magnum with a Hemi in it so I can chase down all the 350 Z's and Corvettes...

Oh yeah, I've heard that American cars have no depreciation too!

Hey Nick, what the hell are you trying to say, neither of your posts make any sense...are you saying you'd rather own a 350Z...the whole things makes absolutely no sense. It's sat. night, may be it's the wine bud.

Im with you robert
After having a new c6 I got rid of it pretty quick. GM quality is very very poor. You can't even compare the two.
