Default TPMS Oddity - Add Air

2009 C2S 193K miles

Just when you think you saw it all..... I have a super slow leak in my right rear tire.... like a pound every two months or so. I need to pull the tire and look for a nail... or maybe it is leaking from the rim which is a pain to remedy.... anywho....

I got the "Add Air" warning on my dash and the yellow tire icon lit up. I never had that notification because I was really good at keeping tire pressure up. It noted I was down -4 on that right rear. So at my nieces house, I pulled the Porsche pump and added a bout 5 pounds... that is a really good little pump and the gauge is pretty darn accurate. The light on the dash never went out and it showed add -1 pounds even though the TPMS showed one pound more than the left. I drove the car for about 25 minutes, then started it up the next morning and it was still on. So I went through the menus and "SET" it again for summer tires... then it went out. The system had to re-learn but when it did after about one mile or so, the tire light was out. Odd.

Peace

I've had similar oddities, sometimes the SET trick works but a lot of times it comes back until you do it a few times OR you inflate the tire a bunch, get the lights out, then lower it back down. Changing the load works sometimes too. I like to run 33/39 hot so sometimes it comes on when the tires are cold and drives me crazy the whole ride (even after they heat up to acceptable pressures.

My TPMS in the 997 is so erratic and frustrating I had it turned off through the DME.
The TPMS in my Mercedes SUV works flawlessly

Hey Bruce,

I hdd a slow leak on one of my wheels. After seeing a post on here I checked the TPMS valve stem and sure enough it was loose. IIRC it took an 11mm wrench to tighten. When done, my slow leak was solved. Something to check before pulling the wheel and breaking down the tire.

Cheers.

Thanx... I will check today... going to pull the wheel and look for a nail. First I will check that stem, then look for a nail, then spray soapy water around the rim/tire interface.

If leaking at the rim, multiple tire shops told me my wife's Lexus rims are corroded and only a wheel refurb will fix it... Toyota rims corrode and it is common. So I had eight rims leaking (winter and summer sets) some air. When I moved to Atlanta, I chose the rim set that was in the best shape, trashed my winter tires, had those four refurbed/painted and all it good. For my Porsche, I have a feeling that just breaking the bead and reseating the tire will work.

QUESTION: Anyone know if I can break the bead and reseat on my own? I never did this before.

Peace

You 997.2 guys get the good engine...us early 997 guys (2005 and some 2006) get the better exhaist note and no TPMS BS to deal with LOL

If you are Superman, that may work. Otherwise, you will need a tire mounting machine to do that.
Take your wheel to a tire installer and ask them to do that for you. It will be cheaper and more effective.

Also, get a valve stem tool and make sure the internal valve stem is tight and the super slow leak isn't from there. Check the other 3 while you're at it.
