Is Bore Scoring hyped up to be worse than it really is?
Just thought this was an interesting video where he finds the scoring on his 997 but then goes on to express doubt whether or not it’s really an issue since the compression and leak down tests are fine so he’s not worried about it. He goes onto say that folks are rebuilding their engines for what we know are huge expenses at the very first sign of cylinder scoring, but questions whether that’s really needed.

And I know not apples to apples, but here’s a link on how an Alfa owner had scoring on two engines in his Giulia. Guess it doesn’t only happen with Porsches. So should you just keep driving on if you ever experience this in your car? LOL.

Time to separate the men from the boys, come on down to South NJ and I’ll scope the bottom on bank 2 for free! And you can draw your own conclusions
And I won’t even open the oil pan.
eventually the motor will grind itself to death through grit paste oil and ruin everything.
that’s the problem.

But doesn’t an engine start grenading itself from day one? Even Porsche says it’s ok for the engine to burn up to 1.6 quarts of oil per 622 miles which translates to about a quart per 390 miles. Yes, that is crazy oil usage and they most likely do that to rid themselves of liability for warrantied engine replacements but it also means that the engine can continue to run at that level of oil burn. LOL.

They say that cause they knew it was a problem lol.
The piston coating was known at the time to not work with lokasil. Let alone 20 years later now. Add offset wrist pins for noise, poor cooling capacity, open deck design, maxed out bore:stroke ratio, garbage factory oil and terrible interval changes and boom! The bottom half of the cylinders is cooled solely by oil. The bottom of the piston exits the cylinder at bdc.
the factors above cause the silicon particles which are larger than the piston to wall gap to break out of the aluminum matrix like a rock in a pot hole on the road and embed itself on the soft piston coating. That then acts like a little piece of diamond in the basically all aluminum cylinder at you control the RPM grinding machine. lol.
when my engine was scored my car CHEWED through oil at like 1 quart every 500 miles which is under spec, smoked like a MF on starts on left side and sat there and tapped like a metronome at hot idle.
when lokasil cylinders are in tip top shape and the AOS system is working as intended these motors use very little oil.

The answer the OP’s question comes in 3 parts (in order of popularity):
1. Folks who bury their head in the sand (won’t happen to me) - it’s overhyped
2. Folks who have scoring but think they can live with it - it does happen, but not a big deal
3. Folks who have scoring and have had to have a rebuild - tens of thousands of reasons to say it isn’t overhyped enough!
(I don’t believe this conjecture about people being too quick to get a rebuild. The 997 generally attracts a more fiscally discerning buyer, not someone with more money than sense)

Another thread emphasizing importance of getting a Bore Scope Inspection prior to purchase.
There is a feeling of calm & peace of mind when you have taken the time to perform Bore Scope Inspection PRIOR to purchase and your cylinders are clean and un-scored..
The subject of Bore Scoring wasn't even mentioned or addressed years ago when the 997 was 5-6 years old but now that engines have attained more miles, Bore Scoring is a very real issue w/much higher rate of scoring in the 3.8L "S" engine.
