A CVT is a couple of rubber bands with a pair of Gerbils going at it...

Prefer to think of it as a sewing machine, but you're entitled to your opinion 😂😂

If I put a PDK in D, does it shift for me? If the answer is yes then it's an automatic. I can put my Chevy Econoline work van in manual mode and hit the up/down shift buttons. It shifts when I say so but I assure you, it is not a manual transmission.

Cripes, you cannot even stall a PDK.
I used to hold my dad's auto trans Malibu in gear with a column shifter so it would rev longer before shifting.
Did I create a manual transmission when I did that?
It is a dual clutch automatic transmission with the ability to shift manually or just leave it in auto.
Sadly the auto feature is better than 99% of the operators in gear selection. The PDK shift map "learns" how you drive and soon becomes better than you.

I know, I have a PDK in my Macan.
It is so sweet.

If you stay either on or off the gas, it is pure magic, as the gear on the second driveshaft is pre-selected for you and is always the appropriate gear (up when accelerating and down when not). The only time it is not lightening quick is when you do not telegraph your intentions with the accelerator. Then, and only then, it might pre-select the wrong gear, but it recovers as soon as you press or let off the gas. Or brake.

It is the equivalent of having your passenger move the shift lever on a manual to the next gear for you while concentrating on the line/braking point/apex location.
It's automation. Automatic, with a manual overide.

This is all semantics.
It's faster than a "manual", though.
See what I just wrote?

It will not help how many interpretations will give it.

Bottom line, there are currently three main transmission systems on the market:

1. Automatic (from torque converter (Traditional automatic) to KDD existing in Koenigsegg)

2. Semi-automatic / dual clutch (PDK is considered the best on the market. For track and F1 there is also sequential transmission).

3. Traditional manual (including stick and third pedal).

automatic - a transmission that does not require human input to function
manual - a transmission that does require human input to function

A PDK transmission is really is Automatic(adjective) : (of a device or process) working by itself with little or no direct human control. "I'll drop it a couple, I'm headed into a tunnel" 6 seconds later, it changes up 4 gears to save fuel, or quiet down, or something.

Manual transmissions are completely human controlled, can't work without physical input from the driver.

Nor can the PDK in manual mode.

The real test is when it comes time to repair/replace.

I can bet the repair shop guy wont say of your PDK, "it's ok, its only a manual because you sometimes drive it in manual mode, it will be cheap."

I think the total worldwide is 136,745 997.1s and 76,259 997.2s produced.
Wikipedia says US sales were 55,059 for the dot one and 27,118 for the dot two.

The 2008 Great Recession had a long reach!

A search in Carsguide, (the biggest Aussie car site) reveals how few MT's are actually for sale at the moment.

Combined 991.1, 991.2, 997.2, C2, C2s, C4, C4s cars for sale 33 (excluding GT3, Turbos, GT2, and other halo cars.)
Only 10 997.2's out of that bunch.
One 991.1 Carrera coupe manual.
One 997.2 Carrera S Cab manual.
Oh, and the 997.2 was 20k more than the 991.1, slim pickin's indeed.

If you are looking for another 2011 C2S coupe, there were only 849 produced - total production. I have a low mileage 2011 C2S coupe 6 sp. When I bought mine the salesman estimated there were only about 100 of those that were 6 sp sold in the US. People have a hard time believing there were 2265 GTS coupes produced in 2011. Porsche sold 550 GT3 RS 4.0s that year. I guess the financial crisis didn't slow down the aristocracy, and they weren't buying plain Jane Carreras.
