Default Location oil temperature sensor??

Last days my oil temperature drops suddenly to 60 degrees (celcius) and within a second back to 90.
Seems a malfunctioning oil temperature sensor.

For now I want to check the connectors. When no result, I want to replace the sensor.

My problem for now: I don't know where this particular sensor is located.

Does anybody know?

Thanks

Assuming you have a 997.2, I believe that the sensor is a combined oil pressure and temperature sensor (e.g. PN 94860621300). It's installed on the top of the engine on the RHS immediately behind the oil filter. You normally have to drop the engine an inch or two to make access easier.

I searched Pelican Parts. Looks like the part is a combination level/temperature sensor. That'll give an idea of where it's located.

Attached is a Word document that shows you all the sensor locations in the 997.1

I seem to have the exact same problem. Oil temp gauge close to 200 then drops to lower than 150 as if the engine was off.

The issue has been appearing sporadically for the past 3 year but it was the first time I've seen the gauge that low.

This happened while I was on a very sh1tty road that was super bumpy and in terrible condition. Then it was fine once I accelerated and for the rest of the ride.

Before spending a fortune on labor to get the sensor replaced, are there any connections or other stuff I could check?

I have an iCarSoft OBDII but it cannot read oil temperature.

Could the gauge be failing?

if the sensor was not reading any values while driving, wouldn't I get a warning or something?

Petza914, I know this is an old post, but I am having oil temp gauge issues on my 2006 997 CS. I looked at your engine sensor document and am confused about the sensor labeled "Coolant Temp Sensor (on the 2nd page). Forgive me if this was already addressed somewhere. However, according to my Parts Catalog and some other online resources this is listed as the Oil Pump assembly. And the yellow arrow points to the oil temp sensor. Am I looking at this incorrectly?

Look more carefully at that diagram. The oil pump is the portion where those gears mesh with each other. Now look to the right at that cover plate assembly along with the spring pressure relief assembly. That plate fits over the oil pump assembly to the left sectioning it off from the rest of the passageway around it which is a coolant flow channel. Sensor #27 that screws into that square passageway is actually in coolant, not in oil.

On a 997.1, the oil pressure sensor is separate and easily changeable. It's down the Bank 2 side of the motor. Unfortunately, the oil level and oil temp sender is a long rod that goes down into the engine from above and is so long it can't be removed with the engine in the car.

On a 997.2, they fixed this and they are separate sensors and the smaller oil temp sensor is just mounted on the engine.

Wow, ok. Well, thank you for that explanation, I appreciate it. That is disappointing at best . Zero chance of resolving that issue.
