Default 997.1 4S Sport Chrono retrofit worth it?

When I bought my (used) 2007 997 Targa 4S, Sport Chrono was the one feature I wanted but was willing to sacrifice to get everything else I wanted.

There is a retrofit kit and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it.

When i test drove cars cars I drove several 2S with Sport Chrono (and loved it), but never found a 4/S with it.

My car is a manual with standard S exhaust and i replaced the pcm with an aftermarket setup.

So with my car, I basically would just get:
- throttle response
- PSM “standby”
- rev hard limiter
- sportier awd mode??

According to suncoast, there is also a sportier adjustment to the all wheel drive system? Or is that just for 997.2 cars?
https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/9X7SM.html

For anyone that has a 4S with SC, what’s it like to drive in sport mode? Does it get tail happy but still step in if you’re too crazy? How far is that limit? Does it feel a lot sportier? Or does the AWD system kind of dampen all of that?

I don't like the mapping of SC in a MT car - wife's has it and we neither one of us ever use it. Also, if you happen to have PSE, you'll lose the individual control of the exhaust valves with the upgrade as the exhaust will only be in sport more when the sport button is pressed. The replacement panel below the HVAC replaces the PSE button with the SPORT button.

My vote - skip it.

08 4S 6MT. Went on long drive this weekend with lots of good turns wet and dry. The SC mapping is ok with minimal stop and go driving and throttle blips are a little easier, but I over blipped on downshifts too easily because it is just too sensitive IMO. Sucks for stop and go traffic. I don't mind that I have it and will use it some, but I would not pay for the pleasure if it didn't come with the car for a manual.

I loved the idea when I was shopping and loved the feel of it in my test drives. But now that I own the car I hardly ever use it on my C2 (and that's with a 3.6). Maybe at the track it's worth the trouble and expense, but on city streets in sport mode in real life the car is bumpier and twitchier and less fun, IMHO. As a stock option it's nice to have for resale though, but being an added kit I doubt it will do much for the value of your car.

It's the first button I hit every time I drive the car for either spirited canyon drives or just cruising. I then will turn PASM off If I want a more subtle ride. Without it the throttle response is way too sluggish for me. Been the same for all my 997's. 05 base, 08 TT and now 07 C4S.

To be honest I do not have this in my manual and never will. I heard it does wonders for automatic cars, but most people literally just do this with the Sport Wart. No thanks.

I think my primary interest is in how it affects PSM and possibly the AWD system (if that’s even possible in the viscous coupled .1 models?)

Can anyone comment on how that works and feels? How do you control it?

I drove a 997.2 PDK with sports chrono, on normal mode it drives like a Toyota Camry but when I hit the sports + button it turns into a beast! I think it's a must have with a PDK or tiptronic. I don't see how this would be much benefit with a 6sp manual.

I think that pretty much nails the consensus here over the years on this subject. Not worth it and of little use for a manual but an absolute must for PDK cars.

I disagree - manual 997.1 C2S. Changes the car from a cruiser to a track beast. Love all aspects of it.

This thread got me thinking about my 6 month old car (to me). Apparently, one can run in Sport mode with PASM off - for a punchier throttle without the bumpy ride. I did not realize this. It might change my opinion about your question.

Correct - and if you have a DSC box that will not change maps no matter how much you press the sport button....

I added Sport/Sport+ to my 2009 Boxster PDK. IMHO Sport+ is a must for the track. Keeps RPM between 4K and redline. It has a different throttle map and a less intrusive PSM. Suncoastparts has a pretty thorough explanation and I don't see how Sport affects awd mode.
