Thank you both. Stock is a bit quiet but also feel compelled to keep it all stock.
Exhaust + tune are immense changes to the driving experience and your enjoyment from the car. Both very quick to revert back to stock (keep the stock exhaust).
I...They do sound kind of like vacuum cleaners stock....
The vacuum cleaner sound is actually induction noise. Its very common and very desirable to hear induction noise in a front engine car, like BMWs, since the exhaust note is at the rear and seem to compliment each other. Hearing it in a rear engine car is odd to most people since it is mixed with the somewhat quiet stock exhaust note.

I've had modified Caymans with very noticeable and pleasant induction noise... I never considered the stock exhaust sound on a 996 Turbo to be induction noise, but if it is, it doesn't fall into the 'pleasant' category.

IMHO of course.
The stock exhaust doesn't produce the induction noise. The air being drawn through the turbo piping, plenum and intake runners creates the induction noise. The stock exhaust being relatively quiet allows the driver to hear it. The combination of both the induction and muffled exhaust mixing and coming from the rear of the car is what sounds odd, vacuum like, to some.
Here is list some folks made of cars with the best induction sounds, the Cayman is on it.

Interesting list. They just lump all the BMW M cars together as so many have that great induction sound. I know it’s really noticeable on my e39 M5; more so than any other bimmer I’ve owned and I’ve had six others. If you blip the throttle at idle you can literally hear the V8 sucking in the air. With the individual throttle bodies, the response is instantaneous. At full gallop, the exhaust sound overrides the induction noise.
I hadn’t thought about the fact that on a 911, the exhaust and induction sound through the intake plenum are in the same proximity.

Went to the track Saturday, a buddy is a pro photographer and took some pictures.
Palmer's Whiskey Hill Racetrack is scenic, oh man it's scenic with the rock walls and cliffs.
I had the fuel line come off the fuel pump (again) so needed to fix it (again), I'm getting annoyingly good at this. There is a convenient seat built in for ease of repair.
Were you running with Mass Tuning? If so, how do you like them, I typically run with NER and NC PCA

That is a truly beautiful track, with lovely fall colors against the rock.
Sorry about the fuel pump issues; at least you actually fit in the frunk, so that has to be something.

I understood what you were saying, I just disagreed with it and didn't want to just flat out contradict you...
But to be clear, I do not think the less than glorious sound you hear on a stock 996 Turbo is induction noise. I think it's exhaust noise, just not a pleasant exhaust noise. I could be wrong, but the point is moot. Stock Turbos don't sound great, whatever the reason.

You can think whatever you want but that "vacuum" sound is 100% induction created. Does a vacuum suck air or blow out? Induction = vacuum.

Yes, MassTuning. They are inexpensive and you get a lot of track time. Some of the cars are.... interesting mechanically. They try to put on a good event and sometimes they are let down by bad drivers and poorly maintained cars.
I have not run with either NER or NC PCA.
