If they were the same price I'd choose 991S everytime. It's an amazing car and if you haven't driven one yet, you're missing out. As you can tell I was thoroughly impressed. However, a certified used 991S is twice the price of a minty 996TT and steeply on the downslide. At this point in time, the 996TT is the clear winner here, still an absolute bargain.
This was my rational as well. I for the longest time had most difficulty in choosing amongst 996 C4S, 996tt, 997.1tt, or 991/S, all great cars in their own right.
Narrowed it down to 991 and 996tt. Ended up with 996tt since it as the bottom of the depreciation curve and will likely continue to go up in value; 991 will still depreciate. At some point I will likely own a 991, just not now.
Yup, never a 996 'Turbo S' model before 2005, (even though it really was just a turbo with X50 and ceramic brakes). And there's no way I'd give anything close to $57K for that hacked and abused 2003 with 60K+ miles.
This is the first 996T that I've seen Cars Dawydiak price 'out of market'. Most of their stuff is clean and priced to the mileage / condition.
I'm downtown SF later in the week, I'll try to swing by and have a look.
Had quite a few aftermarket parts and recent services- FVD bypass pipes in trunk, some type of exhaust system, springs, APR tune, a hacked apart airbox?, slotted (not drilled) rotors, short shifter, clutch accum delete, rear wiper delete, hard wired valentine 1, and a few other things I'm forgetting?
Interior was a little rough, carbon was very cracked from heat/sun. Drove well, stopped well, sounded good. Not surprised it was gone fast.
I think that's why the perception of the market can be high sometimes. Overpriced cars will sit on the market for months and months, but the good deals don't. My car was listed on ebay at about 7:00 am and I already placed a deposit by 2:00 pm same day.
Went to go look at the above mentioned 991S today... 2012 coupe, 32K miles, PDK, super-clean, nicely optioned, 2-owner, clean carfax, $110K original sticker at a local Colorado dealer for $59,500.
Some ***head from Miami snaked it sight unseen an hour before I got there. ;-)
Still, a good reference at what well priced 991S's are starting to go for!
I'm seeing some low mileage no issues 991S's at under $60K. If your seeing minty turbo's at half that price, I'd love to get a link to them!
Not CPO cars (nor will the TT's be CPO), but as I do pretty much all my own work, a CPO warranty isn't nearly as valuable to me as it might be to others.
Exactly it is more like a 5-20k difference depending on how clean and low mileage the 996 turbo is (x50 does he usual bump right) and how well priced the 991 S is. You can get a great highly optioned 991 S with sport package etc for 60k. See many of these and they sell quick obviously. I have driven one they are great hence why I am leaning great all aroundee that meets my needs, ideally you have both

To be more specific, I was looking at nicely optioned 2014s and they were right at $90K. I do most of my own work too but if faced with a 991 PDK issue or flakey electrical issue (these cars are way more sophisticated than a 996), my mechanical and electrical skills are not going to save me much.

At $90K, i'd be taking a serious look at a base 991.2 "turbo not Turbo" car...
Agree that PDK might be a good reason to consider CPO!
This one is a no go. Lady driven, no maint, jiffy lube oil changes, she overfilled by 6 qts, and she drove around for awhile. A shame as its 9/10'inside and out.......won't wish this car on anybody
And only 20k miles argh wtf, and it's an 01.....maybe offer 15k and plan for a rebuild day 1

So sad I would never buy a vehicle that was "lady driven".
Sent..she seemed stubborn and clueless about the car from what I was told . I'd have no faith in intervals both powertrain and brake and suspension wise as no other Maint than quick lube.
Not all women are like this but even my so who is a big car nut, doesn't really take Maint as serious as I do. She has a lease m235i tho, thank goodness, so BMW Maint covers her every 15k, still hate that interval but we are not buying that car out, so it's fine
