Dammit, Kleebss, don’t make me make another trip to Chicago! :-)
Haha! Told you I’d keep an eye and contribute on this thread. This really is the best deal I’ve seen on a manual x50 car so I thought I’d share, plus I know the owner and he’s a standup guy.
A comparable S is always going to be worth more than an X50 even if the X50 has PCCB. Once they are significantly modified or have higher miles both X50 and Turbo S's don't add much to the price because the people that pay top dollar don't want high miles or highly modified cars.
Right, that's my point. However I'm seeing the opposite. First, finding a Turbo S is rare but when you do it tends to cost less than a Turbo w/ X50. Again, I think the S should garner a premium more than an X50 package since it includes PCCB, aluminum cluster and 6-disc changer. However the market will do what the market will do and the X50s are more.
Case in point:
2003 TT with X50: https://www.ebay.com/itm/26616256806...Bk9SR7LdxqThYQ
Granted these are low mileage examples but the point is still valid. It only makes sense if you're aware of the production numbers of both models.
Total Turbo S manufactured: 1563
Total Turbo with X50 manufactured: 1124

1) there is a big difference between cabs and coupes.
2) these are asking prices, not sale prices.
Bringatrailer history is a good one to look at. The turbo S tends to fetch the premium there.
Actually "FourWheelTrader" did a 996 turbo market review and he's not seeing much difference in price between cab and coupe. FWIW, here's a snippet of some sales of the 2005 Turbo S Coupe/Cab from Hagerty. They're all over the place AND you can see that some folks must be having some buyers remorse after spending what they spent during the Pandemic. Yikes.

If total production of Turbo's with the X50 option is only 1124, that adds a big premium, because out of those 1124, a LOT of them have been totaled and are either no longer on the road, or have rebuilt titles. Even a conservative number of 25% totaled reduces the available good ones significantly when considering the total amount of 996 Turbos produced. This makes the X50 option rare on a non S Turbo.
If you are talking about this video, i think it clearly shows that the coupes are doing better. Coupes are more expensive, and had way more miles on average.

Right but as he states, it's not statistically confirmed but I agree there is a difference. Not much, but there is. Either way, the Turbo and Turbo S is an investor's sweet spot regardless of body style.

The milage argument that comes after it seals the deal. He talks about milage being the biggest driver for price, yet the coupe market had 20k plus more miles. I dont think he ran the appropiate statistical test. If he would have adjusted for milage, im sure there was a difference statistically.
It's also worth noting that the delta between coupe and cab exists across other 911 generations, not just 996. I think it's fair to extrapolate that considering how much loyalty there is across generations in the Porsche (and specifically 911) brand.
The 996 sports seats (hardbacks) also went for $6,700 in BAT last week. Kicking myself for not swapping the ones I had in my 996 cab to my Turbo before selling the cab.
Yea, the shouldda coudda thoughts come around when you see where pricing has already gone on some stuff. They may be a couple years ahead of pricing here, especially given the condition but... https://www.ebay.com/itm/275657118565

Wow.... Can remember when I was offered a set, in better shape, for $2k...
Sorry I don’t know how to attach a link to the auction… Anyway have a look at all of the interior pictures and tell me how does an interior get so beat up in a car with such low miles?
