Default Mobile 1 vs. Rotella T6

I'd like any feedback, opinions, etc, on Mobile 1 vs. Shell Rotella T6, both in 5W40 Synthetic Turbo Diesel versions.

Any reason not to run Rotella T6 in a Turbo?

I wouldn't be running the 15W.. Look at the 5W40 T6 if you want.

Thanks, fixed it. I meant 5W40.

What's your opinion on the 5W40 T6? as good as the M1? Why or why not?

I like the Mobil products. With that said, I would take the T6 over Mobil 0W40 EVERYTIME. You can get the T6 almost everywhere.

I'm currently running the T6 5-40. When the engine gets good and hot, I hear a little more noise than I did with the M1 5-40 TDT. However, it is a whole lot quieter than the M1 0-40 that was in the car when I bought it.

I'll switch back to the M1 TDT on the next oil change. I don't know of any reason not to run the T6 though. The car seems to like it fine and I have had no measurable oil usage in 2500 miles. With the 0-40 it used 3 bars in 5000 miles and with the M1 TDT it used 1 bar in 5000 miles. That is what I am expecting with the T6.

Have run

0w-40 M1

then

5w-40 M1 TDT

then

5w-50 M1

then

5w-40 T6

The latter three, for the life of me, sound the same and the car seems to run just fine up/down/up/down....noise on the T6 is about the same as the M1 5w-x.

Not sure, frankly, that if you change with regularity, there is any real difference in the last 3. And T2 has 300+k on the 0w-40 stuff, so it seems to do a good job too (at least the older formulation.....).

T6 is about $21 for a gallon...so it is maybe 20$ less for a change. Given the cost of these cars overall, not a huge game changer.

Ran the 5w-50 when living in a much hotter climate.

The car in my avatar was from a period when Shell was on the cars.......go figure.

To all,

I have run M1 0-40 exclusively in my 2003 996 Turbo X50 from day one - changing every 5000 miles religiously. Over time the car has begun to use about a quart of oil within the 5000 miles. Partly due to a very very minor oil leak which is in the queue for repair and partly due I suspect to original turbos - as a data point my car now has over 345,000 miles on the original engine, tranny, turbos, clutch, etc.

With that said the last oil change the shop was out of M1 0-40 so they recommended 5-40 Motul 8100 - can't say I heard a noticeable difference in the engine in terms of quieter or not - honestly I rarely listen to that. I will say there was zero oil consumption in the oil change interval and there were a couple of very hard day drives mixed in there.

My shop mentioned that there is a site called lnengineering.com that recommends the Motul 8100 5-40 based on oil analysis data they have compiled. Check it out - I have no affiliation but thought you could use the information also. Downside is I cannot find Motul anywhere locally.

I was as my local Walmart on Saturday and found the M1 5-40 and bought a bunch of it and will use it in the 2004 Cayenne Turbo as it uses a couple of quarts at oil changes and try to see if there is any noticeable difference.

Thought I would pass along this one data point anyway. Your results may vary.

T2 - continues to knock on wood..................

Thanks for the replies, all. T2, that's remarkable mileage on your car, and kudos to you for logging that much seat time. I've always believed mechanical things when properly designed and maintained wear very little if at all when in use at proper operating temperature. This may be proof of that.

T2, I'd be interested in your thoughts and assessment of the 996 Turbo and overall driving experience.
