Yes, the management of an ongoing electron stream is hard, hard work... let me think about it...

Just thought I'd circle back on this.....the shop/tuner is telling me 8-12 hrs of work and a total cost or around $2400. if done now with the engine/tranny down......however, the fabricators that would do it are backed up so the whole job would have to come down, rolled aside for now. I'll flip a coin.

One more point, and yes, I should probably take this thread elsewhere......I know this is a problem that goes back over 20 yrs however, on the motor just in from Germany, how many of those fittings are 'fresh' on that motor...and is that worth anything to me if I choose to forgo.

That includes the few hundred for the pin kit.....and I'm told that there is a fair amount of disassembly that needs to happen in order to remove certain pieces and weld/pin.

I would suspect they are not using the same adhesive as they are now most certainly aware of the original problem.

It would appear you have the newest motor of any of us, save for maybe Powdrhound, with all new rubber, gaskets, etc., I was surprised on how it came to you - I was fully expecting just a long block with nothing on it.

If that were my engine and I decided to pin the fittings (I'm not sure I would), I wouldn't remove them and re-glue prior to pinning.

True if welding, but not for pinning (since all the fittings can be pinned with the engine in the car.)

I am about to pull the trigger on getting my garage remodeled, which means my Turbo and R8 will be needing a short term (a few days only?) home sometime in the near-medium term future...

My wife's Tesla can sit outside while the garage work is being done.

Well, I could probably hold the turbo for you, and drive the R8...

$2400 is a huge huge ripoff. There is absolutely no need to remove the fittings for pinning. You simply drill/tap/pin. With engine out, it's about a 4-6hr job taking your time including removal and the disassembly needed to get to the fittings by the oil cooler. Very easy for anyone moderately competent at wrenching on these cars. Tons of DIYs on line.

I do not . Gotta be something electric related to replacing the radio tho…seems that is the common denominator I’ve searched. Atleast I hope. Will find ou more this weekend.

The trick to drilling the holes for the fittings is to coat the drill bit with grease when drilling so that any aluminum shavings will be captured as you drill. Re-grease the drill bit during the course of drilling. That is the only "trick" when doing this. Same thing when tapping the threads. Other than that, it's very straight forward. An angle drill is very helpful to get into the tighter spots.

Might also be worth installing a manual dipstick while the engine is out. Cheap and nice to have as a backup to the electronic gauge.
