Michael.

Sounds correct in theory. That said, I would be shocked if Porsche has as part of its protocol continuous monitoring of all of the oils on its approved list to see if they have changed their formulation at all.

My guess is that it's up to the oil manufacturer to notify Porsche of any formulation changes or Porsche will find out from UOA in failed engines with dealer-maintained vehicles. Anyway, I've sent the author of that article, Herve Blanquart of Total Lubricants USA, an email inquiring about that. I hope he responds.

This should be a given, but an oil that isn't on the Porsche approval list could simply mean that it was not submitted by the oil manufacturer to go through the approval process. Based on the information (trending UOA) on BITOG: 1) M1 5W-40 TDT is a very good oil for gasoline engines that would most likely meet or exceed Porsche approval, and 2) M1 0W-40 is also a great oil that meets Porsche approval. I believe Doug Hillary, based on his conversations with Porsche technical engineers and various race teams, has said on a few occassions on BITOG that using the correct viscosity is more important than brand or formulation.

Anyway, if M1 0W-40 is not a great oil based on your experience, then I think it would make more sense to establish a communication channel with PAG on your findings. AE Haas has had no problem communicating with Ferrari North America and Lamborghini with his request to use a non-approved oil (and different viscosity at that) in his Ferraris and Lamborghinis as he has been sharing his UOA findings with them. Doug Hillary has even communicated his intention to use M1 5W-40 TDT with Porsche Australia (although it seems Doug has switched back to M1 0W-40).

Michael.

Lewis, I wasn't zinging you as a moderator here. You're one of the few on rennlist who I respect and admire for level of patience. That said, the problem with those I mentioned in my previous post is the "imperical" stance taken without facts. Simply waving Porsche NA specs doesn't cut it, and is more often than not out-dated and inaccurate.

We don't know why one motor lasted 300K miles. However, that one motor lasting that long doesn't prove anything beyond the fact that one owner actually had great luck and bravo to him for using the car as it was meant to be used. We do know that a number of motors have failed... quite a few actually...

In my mind the "Data" isn't present. We don't know how many motors, how they failed or how often they were maintained. Anyone saying otherwise should prove it. Until then we know this:

Porsche recommended M1 0W40 from the factory for a number of years.
Mobil Changed the formula in 2008 and again later.

Beyond that what facts are there? What total "data" is there on this subject?

Mike

Why do people seem to be polarized over oil? I don't know the answer.

Why do people care about oil? Simply to protect their investment and to achieve longevity with their engine.

Tom's car achieved 300K on an oil that many feel is harmful to engines (too thin, too little additives, etc) and therefore recommend other brands, viscosities, formulations, yet don't have the longevity information to substantiate their decisions/opinions.

If in fact the new 0-40 M1 formulation is more harmful to engines than the "old" formulation, then Tom's engine, having 200K? Miles already on it prior go the suspected switch should have been far more likely to fail due to the effects if the new oil, simply due to age, wear, etc.
But it didn't happen.

Again, if 0-40 is harmful to engines and should not be used, why did an engine make it to 300k and others fail at 30k? The 300k engine simply should not be, yet it is.

Until that is answered, it will remain nothing but speculation and opinion...a typical RL oil thread.

I started this, just looking for a proper substitue for M1 5-50 that would be suitable in the extreme Texas heat.

This has been fascinating to follow. Honestly, if I had to pick a side, I would go with Kevin and Mike. My car was built 7+ years ago and I know formulations have changed since then.

Having owned a couple of F350 turbo diesels that pulled a 15,000lb trailer across half the country in the Summer, I know that TD oils can take a serious beating without shearing. If they are safe for gas engines (and they are), I am comfortable that I will rarely put them through in my Porsche, what I regularly put them through in my trucks. I was running 1200F EGTs for a couple of hours at a time through passes in NM.

My OM doesn't recommend approved brands. It recommends approved weights for certain conditions meeting certain API stds.

All that said, I'm sure some oils are better formulated than others for these engines, but given normal street service, and change intervals of 5000 miles... I'm pretty sure most of us will get a lot of trouble free miles out of our motors by using high quality synthetics.

Great discussion though, and I'm not going to try to win the argument

Miscibility:
All engine oils approved by Porsche can be mixed provided they are of the same Porsche oil
specification. This means that it is not necessary to flush the engine when the oil is changed if
another type of oil is used. However, since every brand of oil has a specially adapted unique
composition, the same brand and type of oil should be used for topping up between oil change
intervals if possible.

I assume everyone agrees that ZDDP is a good additive. It is "consumed" over time protecting the engine, thus you see zinc levels diminish with miles on the oil (see the oil test results posted earlier). It includes phosphorous as well.

EPA doesn't like zinc, sulfur or phosphorous in motor oils. The following quote is from this EPA document: http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/hd2007/420r02016.pdf

"Engine oil components can affect emission control technologies in a number of ways. Sulfur in engine oil can contribute to catalyst poisoning in a manner similar to sulfur in diesel fuel. Therefore, it is desirable for engine oils to have low sulfur concentrations. Various metals in engine oils, including phosphorous and zinc, can also poison catalyst function over the long term. Therefore, it is desirable to reduce the metal content of engine oils."

So understanding the requirements helps me understand the results.

If EPA wants Porsche to reduce zinc/sulfur/phosphorous in order to ensure that their catalytic convertors last 100,000 miles then that's a requirement for the oil. Engine wear avoidance doesn't trump EPA because EPA fines Porsche for noncompliance.

Oil weight is a "don't ask/don't tell" issue as far as I'm concerned. Do as you will, weigh the risks, you bear the consequences (especially if you expect a warranty to cover you ).

Bravo John... This is the TYPE of info that SHOULD be posted... Not just saying "PNA says to use 0W40 exclusively" which is what we tend to get a lot of... God forbid we suggest anything other than 0W40... And Lewis, I still don't understand the whole "one example proves the point" argument, but if it works for you, then have at it!

Danica all the way...

Mike

expiration date of the approval is given in the last column in the list. Once this validity period has
elapsed, the approval in question is revoked unless an extension is requested by the relevant

That Danica comment hurt ....

Regarding 0W-40, first let me state that as the founding member of the 996Turbo Garage Queen club, I am fairly certain I won't live long enough for oil based engine longevity to become a concern.

That having been said, I have noticed that 0W-40 is generally hated across all of the water cooled forums here on RL. I am surprised the US Surgeon General hasn't come out against M1 0W-40.
If in fact 0W-40 is as bad as it is made off to be (regardless of formulation changes over the years, it is mainly the viscosity of 0W-40 that people object to), then NO engine should ever make it to 300K miles.
The 2 items (0W-40 will kill your engine and a car with 300K miles using 0W-40) are mutually exclusive.

I can understand the visceral reaction to 0W-40 (again, it's been discussed so many times on so many forums I lost track of all the threads), but the fact remains that it simply can't be as bad as it is made off to be, again, simply based on the existence of a 300K mile engine.

So, it does bring into question the rationale behind the general disdain for 0W-40. Not saying 0W-40 is the best oil ever, but it doens't appear to be an engine killer.

I am skipping the whole formulation change discussion since, again, the knock against 0W-40 has been the viscosity (too thin) since day 1, not the ever changing formulations that every oil undergoes.

But again, I am not for or against one oil vs. another oil, just curious how Tom's car could have survived this long, since if you just read the 0W-40 threads, it would never have been predicted or explainable.
