For those of you who used to (or still do) own a 911SC or Carrera and now own a 996 Turbo...
I currently own a 1980 911SC and a 1984 Carrera (in storage mostly). I love both of them, love the driving feel, the air cooled sounds etc. Over the last nine years I've put a lot of money into the SC as well as a litttle blood, sweat (and a few tears). It's bone-dead simple, easy to work on but I've been thinking of something newer - a 964 perhaps.
Now, seeing how the prices are really coming down on the 996 Turbos it has started me thinking, a few more years of saving and selling one of mine, maybe the SC, and I'd be there. It is a heck of a lot of car for the money. I'm just worried I might miss the rawness and feel of the SC, that the Turbo would be too refined, too complex. I've driven a NA 996 but not a Turbo.
Those of you who have owned a 911SC or 3.2 Carrera, did you regret any part of selling the older car? Some may say "You have another one!" Yes, but I have a hard time letting go.
Thanks for your input...

My last Carrera was in the '89 (sold my '85).. I don't miss my old SC or Carrera. The only NA car that I wish I didn't sell was me '93 RSA. The 996TT is alot of a car, and does everything easier and more comfortable. It is a heavier car, not as nimble as the early SC. You might miss starting it up on a cold morning and opening up the "heat" The air-cooled smell can be missed. The Carrera is more refined over the SC. Sell the SC and get the 996TT.

I had an 82 SC before I bought my 79 930 , very similar cars in driving dynamics but a lot more horsepower with the 930. The 996 turbo is in a whole different ballpark than the 930,and a whole different world than the SC, but better in almost every way. They're all good!

95 C4...turbo S body kit by po, coilovers, exhaust, chip....RED.
That was sex on wheels.
Don't miss it. Valve guides, tubes, and a lot less torque.
Only thing I miss: smell.

I had 6 air cooled 911's before the 996TT, including a 993TT and loved all of them. That said, my current 996TT is my favorite by far, I do have fond memories of the '72 and '84 911's and would enjoy having them back as additions, but IMO one drive in a well sorted 996TT will quickly make you forget the older cars...

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes, the smell is a big part of having/driving the older cars, especially turning on the heat (my first car was a 68 Volkswagen, the smell is the same).
How about maintenance at home, who here wrenches on their own cars?

i have a lift so do most the oil, brake and other maintenance or at least what i can. 2 Porsches could get expensive just on oil changes alone if not done at home.

My 996 TT Cab is my 12th Porsche of which 6 were air cooled. My 82 was sold 3 years ago with only 60,000 miles on it to get the TT. I've never looked back. The TT is so much smoother throughout the range and more comfortable to drive it's like a totally different car. Performance increases area given but the driveability is what really makes the difference.
