Default 996 TT vs GT3 Master Cylinder question.

Dumb question but: I am in the process of upgrading the front brakes to the larger GT3 calipers and rotors and wonder whether I need to change the brake master cylinder since it will now have six piston calipers instead of four? Is the MC the same? Thanks!

I'm not home, so I can't check if there's difference in MC size...which might have been done just for pedal feel's sake, because total piston area and thus total piston volume are the same in both calipers.

Scott you have to realize that the Porsche 6 piston Monoblocks CAME stock on the Turbo S or any car ordered with ceramic brakes. There was no master cyclinder upgrade.

The concern that I have is that you should consider installing the larger rear calipers like Porsche has recommended when you upgrade the fronts.

Kevin,
Am I incorrect that the rear GT3 brakes are the same as the 996TT brakes? And if they are the same, why would there be a problem upgrading the front brakes on the 996 TT to GT3 calipers, etc. BTW, I'm using Pagid Yellows on the front and Blacks on the rear.

The GT2, GT3, Turbo S and Ceramic option REAR brakes are all the same. They are alot larger vs the 996TT. The rear pads are very large, infact they are the same size as the existing 996 front pads.

Kevin,

When I look up Pagid Black rear pads for the 996TT and GT3 on Vivid Racing and Pelican Parts, they are the same part numbers. So why not just upgrade the front brakes on my TT to GT3 calipers, rotors, etc.?

Scott, I can't tell you how much mis-information is out there.

FACT>> The YELLOW 6 piston Monoblock brake system has larger REAR calipers and larger pads..

Look up this number 996 352 949 02 (stock 996TT) vs 996 352 947 01

I did this upgrade
Kevin is correct
you end up with much larger front and rear brake pads from stock 996tt
I did not upgrade the master - and wish I had

You sure about this? Part numbers can be DIFFERENT for the same parts.

From EVERYTHING that I have read and researched, the rear of the Turbo and GT3 is the SAME as the front on the 996C2 and 986S. The major difference was the in the front.......the GT3 was fitted with the 6 piston calipers.

If they are different can you provide the data so we can get educated on the differences?

I bought Kevins upgrade kit and installed it without a MC change. Fantastic upgrade and no problems at all.

No MC change. 3 basic ways to change out to the yellow calipers and larger rotors. if you are using actual GT3 calipers you can use 997 rotors with out modifiying. If you are planning on fitting GT2/3 rotors you will need to modify the caliper mounting location of your suspension carriers. (to do this correctly with all the correct geometry.) Guys have buggered the calipers to make it work, but that's up to you. I think Kevin was selling upgrade kits, not sure if he still is.

As far as the rears, GT3 calipers are larger in casting due to the larger 350mm rear rotors, stock 996tt are 330. All else being equal. You can run larger GT3 rotor and use stock calipers by shimming the calipers with 10mm spacers. Pad sizes are the same.
