Imagine the cost to have a welder do the job. But anything done right to a car will cost you.

Figure 10k to pull motor, weld new (better) coolant fittings, change clutch, change all coolant hose and all o-rings on motor and any other incidentals while apart. Essentially a top-end rebuild sort of.

Seven years ago when I had my engine pulled, pipes welded and few other preventative things done the cost was $4500 cash. It was a special deal with the work being done during the dead of winter.

Not to keep beating this horse, but welding isn't going to be that much more expensive than the "proper" pinning procedure outlined in this thread. Most of the cost is in the R&R of the engine + everything else you do while you're in there.

Looking back at my recent invoice of having this all done (@ Vollig in San Diego), I paid 15 hours labor (just under $2k) for the actual welding labor ("DISASSEMBLE COOLANT ASSEMBLIES, REMOVE EXISTING COOLANT FITTINGS, FIT NEW THICKER WELDABLE FITTINGS, WELD FITTINGS. ASSEMBLE COOLANT ASSEMBLIES").

Total bill was over $10k (not including the transmission rebuild) but we did "everything" + I slipped a few upgrades in there (intercoolers, clutch, GT2 slave).

and yet, here you are.

"nail in the coffin"? as you are the official arbiter and have the final definitive "word"? i think not lol, that's ridiculous.

it's not a BIG DEAL unless they FAIL ( how many of the thousands of 996 turbos have had the coolant lines fail? not many ) or you WANT to proactively have the coolant fittings retroactively re-fitted to answer certain race track requirements.

your analogy reminded me of a Dr Suess book about the sneetches in Whoville. Some had stars on thars, and some did not and some felt bad.

me? i dont give a flying **** about the coolant lines that have performed and functioned as intended for 17 years and 170k miles.

if they ever let "go" they get repaired. meanwhile, the SKY is FALLING.

My passenger side (rear) cooling hose split, when cool, not under load, and that was enough to get me to pin - upon inspecting the damaged hose, there was zero sign of rubber decomposition/hardening - it simply let go after 15 years.

The sky fell that day...

i am terribly sorry to hear of that but i can't imagine you taking it "that hard". but it's funny. the only time you ever hear of them failing is on a porsche car forum.

no one ever reports not having problems. it makes for lousy debates.

Yes, it was one of my first posts on a failure - interestingly, it was the day I got the car back from the garage with the new exhaust on.

Coincidence, or conspiracy? ... you decide tonight @ 9...

same day? not superstitious, but i'd lose that shop on principle alone.

maybe the car knew the the topic had been once again resurrected.

It (the Car) was expressing its distaste for me taking it to a Ford dealer...

It certainly lasts in some (many?) 996 Turbos. Reference k9turbo's car.

There is no data that I know of that indicates that it "was not done properly at factory" on all 996 Turbos.

most. it has lasted in most of 996 turbo's built. my car is not the outlier.

if 996 turbo coolant fittings failed at a higher rate. there would be more than the same 12 of us here talking about "it" year after year.

other than the occasional, but rare "victim" lol. the internet loves misery.
