Greg, get the Traqmate! I think it's much better to directly compare. The traqmate is really nice gear, I recommend it. Get one so we can compare!

I am wondering if its preferable to have everyone on one system.

Is there any problem attaching the traqmate to GT3 to pick up analog data rpm, speedometer ect? Is trackVision integration much of an issue?
Open to suggestion for in car camera.

There should not be an issue getting other data such as rpm. I purchased the RPM input, but have not installed it yet. However, I was told it is an easy plug-in into the ECU.

Below are some of the comments I received:

"It seems to be working just fine now. In fact I have another track weekend on 21/22 and will know for sure then, but wire E6 from the ECU, green with blue tracer (At least on the 996 Turbo and 997S) picks up the No 1 spark signal and works well with Traqmate.

I suspect that the wire is the same for pretty much all later model Porsches.

Connector E is the one to the outside of the car. If you are kneeling in the back facing the rear it's the one on the left. You can tell it's correct because you do not have to remove any other connectors when you unplug that one. "

"It's really simple to do once you figure out how to get yourself squished in behind the seats.

Once I found the correct wire I just used a connector found anywhere that lets you tap into another wire without having to cut the wire. You just wrap the connector around the wire, put your tap wire in the other side and squeeze the connector togeather with pliers. Works like a charm.

Then I ran the tap wire around my rear seats (You don't have them) under the rear rug and up to the console where I mount the TM. You then put the wire into the plug you got from TM, plug it into the SU and you're ready to go. You do not need to attach any other wires.

You will need to go into Trackview and check the box activating RPM, but you only need to do that once. Be sure that the DU is hooked up to your puter so that the puter can send the activation to the DU and you're good to go.

When I'm not using TM and I take it out of the car I just put a wire nut on the end of the wire and leave it under the rug."

Where do I get the input for the RPM on the Traqmate?

I've the RPM plug that connects to the Traqmate unit, but no idea what to pick from the ECU.

Traqmate and G2X have very similar hardware. G2X allows greater (but expensive) expansion to additional sensors, but the base units are pretty much the same. I downloaded the software and some sample tracks for each of them and played for a few days. I also had my 19 y.o, daughter try them.

Traqmate was easier to use out of the box, but it does not have as many ways of analyzing a session or series of laps as the G2X does. As an emblematic example, with Traqmate you have to drag pointers around to set segments of the track. Doing so is very fiddly and awkward. G2X lets you click a few buttons and then, based on the lateral G force changes, it automatically segments the whole track.

You can get the full software and demo track data from each vendor's web site. Do that and see for yourself. I bought G2X.

Rad, the Traqmate website has FORUMS similar to this one and IIRC when I cruising them the other day there was a thread on RPM hookup on a 996.

Chris,

Good luck with the G2x, I think you will like it once you get it set up. I didn't get a chance to send you the pics of my install. I will try to it it in the next couple of days.

Thanks, Bill. It has to come from CA so there is no great hurry. Couple of questions, though. I need a serial to USB adapter for my laptop. Does the G2X have a male or female serial, RS-232 DB-9 connector? I would expect female, but have heard male.

Being that I'm lazy, how about the url? Just got my TraqMate in, and will play with it this weekend (cruising, not track) without the rpm box. But will want to get that installed before I do hit the track (maybe August now).

Chris,

I'm not sure of your question. I use the data from the compact flash card and download through a card reader into my laptop. PM me if this is not what you are asking.
